Three weeks ago the city of Leiden (The Netherlands) turned of their lights for 1.5 hours to bring back the stars. The views were spectacular.

  1. Optimistically, this is cool. Love the effort and find it educational to show people how light pollution affects the night sky. I must say, I live in Noord Holland now, and I can see quite a bit more of the night sky than I was used to seeing when I lived in a large US city.

    Pessimistically, I really do wonder how good the effect was if the neighboring cities didn’t also participate.

    I keep telling myself one day I’ll go up to the Wadden islands where it’s apparently really dark at night, naturally.
