Covid jingoism will not protect the west from the threat of Omicron

  1. I find this piece utterly bizarre. Throughout the whole pandemic the UK has been criticised for not closing borders quick enough. If we were still open to South Africa, why do I doubt there would be a piece praising the UK for remaining open?

Borders have been closed every time a new variant has been detected, why all the whining this time around? I am really struggling to understand the sudden about turn.

  2. The closing of the borders every time a new variant appears is stupid. There are already hundreds of cases here – importing bit less will slow it down by perhaps a few days. And we are almost all vaccinated, we should be aiming for some sort of normal.

That said, I’m fairly sure if the new variant started somewhere like Texas, guardian wouldn’t criticize closing the borders to the US.

  3. Of course when South Africa sensibly introduced travel restrictions on the UK due to the “U.K.” variant, that was a sensible reaction to Tory governed plague island.

  4. I have to admit, I recall a markedly different reaction from the Guardian when the so-called Kent variation was reported and countries sprang to close their doors on us.

  5. Just to be clear, there is still no actual evidence Omicron is more contagious, more dangerous to health or vaccine resistant right? I checked a week ago so maybe that’s changed?
