Is he well known? Because the first time I ever heard of him was on an internet meme about his gay drawings or something a couple years back. I would think that Häyhä, AKA the “white death” is a bit more famous, and also more famous for being a veteran.
Unlike Thorne, Tom of Finland actually had influence. His work inspired several famous artists and designers. He is very important figure for gay people and probably inspired many LGBTQ-people to come out of closet and be themselves. His work gave positive influence for gay men everywhere. I don’t see how some SS-officer could’ve done the same.
And he is still so well-known that at least in Finland, you see very often his images. People have Tom of Finland-bags, bedsheets and curtains. Everybody knows him. And outside Finland, everybody knows people inspired by Tom of Finland.
Some guy who fought in few wars was just a soldier who maybe had influence in few battles. Nothing compared to Tom.

I think Aimo Koivunen deserves more attention. Escaped from soviets and skied for 400km in a week while being injured from a land mine. Survived the whole ordeal and through the war.
