The article says it’s ‘ontnuchterend’ but everyone in traffic knows this already, no?
I especially hate it on roundabouts. I hate roundabouts in Belgium because according to this data 60% of cardrivers are losers. Please if you do this, stop. It’s dangerous and confusing.
Tbf, about 10% of cars in Belgium are BMWs which don’t even have blinkers, so take these numbers with a grain of salt.
So only a small number of people use them.
And those that do on the highway thinks it means they get right of way and can cut you off doing 90 when you’re going 120.
Gebruiken of juist gebruiken?
As a cyclist it’s one of my main grievances.
Recently I’ve also seen people complain online how their car with lane keeping assist keeps fighting them when they try to move lanes without using their indicators and how annoying it is that they need to turn off the assist every time they start the car. So these people are doing it on purpose (or they are so stupid they actually can’t tell what they’re doing wrong but then they shouldn’t be driving a car anyway)
Hmm – I don’t consider it as extremely negative as most posters here.

I notice a few parameters though:
* The more experienced drivers use their indicators and more insecure ones don’t.
* Clichés are not true: What I always find remarkable is that you have this cliche that BMW drivers don’t use indicators, but the reality is the opposite is true. Which makes sense right, in our company car country where people who need a car professionally more often than not have a BMW, whereas in the states, where the cliche comes from, BMWs are higher up market (also much more “m” versions etc) and behaving like yuppie assholes.
* Region based: It’s baffling how much better people are using their indicators in busy regions. Notably, Antwerp, Vlaams brabant and the E19 are doing a pretty good job compared to other regions. Basically I assume this is because they are more used to complex traffic situations (I know multiple people who don’t dare to drive on R0 for example)

But the roundabout thing … yeah no one seems to comprehend how they work.

edit: I see the article confirms the region thing.
Amai.
(Verbaliseren is moeilijk per camera…)
Allez, mijn gedacht.
I was sitting on a bench by the hospital Monday, for about an hour, waiting for my next appointment.
342 cars turned. 63 had a turning signal. 1 for some reason was driving with danger lights.
So about 20% from my own experience.
It was on the crossing between Rue Valenciennoise and Boulevard John Fitzgerald Kennedy, in Mons, between 9h20 and 10h20. The weather was storm/hail (so bad visibility). Note cars can only turn right, no left turns allowed.
As a Dutchman working in Belgium I basically gave up on the roundabout indicator etiquette. Yes I do indicate that I leave the roundabout, but won’t do more than that in Belgium, because people are not accustomed to it and it confuses them.
For context, in NL we are taught that when you approach a roundabout, and your intention is to take the third exit (e.g. take a left at the roundabout), you indicate left when approaching the roundabout. This signals to the other drivers that are waiting, that you will continue on the roundabout. Then you indicate right when you actually do take the exit.
E.g. Approach, want to go left: indicate left > drive the roundabout for 3/4 > indicate right and leave roundabout
But doing this in Belgium has people confused.
And don’t get me started on 2-lane roundabouts…
Next: use of cellphones? or not keeping your 2 seconds distance?
And yet it only requires 2 functional brain cells. Still too much to ask from the majority though. Super.
Best moment: You are waiting to cross a road, you see a car coming fast your way so you wait to cross it with your car. This MF brakes all of the sudden and at the last instance puts on his turning lights, and turns in your road.
People like this, you are the worst. Enjoy Hell
Also fuck people who indicate right to enter a roundabout. Everyone knows you aren’t going to turn left or go straight when you are at a roundabout. When you signal right while entering a roundabout it means you are taking the 1st exist that is very close to your entry point. Whenever I see people enter a roundabout with their right blinker on I assume they are dangerous idiots and I’m right way too often.
The worst thing for me driving in Belgium these days is that an orange traffic light means drive faster apparently
You cannot believe how much rage i have cause retard dont know the concept of when to use a fekking pinker
I was driving behind one of those workvans this morning that didn’t blink at any point. I was listening to Nostalgie when they started talking about this.
Suddenly he started using his blinkers – not exactly consistently, but at least most of the time. I’d like to think he was listening too.
Let’s have another look at the data. The data set –in my opinion– is incomplete.
We need to subtract the cars without indicators. Most beamers and larger mercs don’t have that option. In fact, most of company cars are delivered without.
On Brussels Ring Road the majority is these types of cars.
Not counting these types of cars, the numbers probably look very different. My guess is, all people not driving a beamer or a merc, that pay for their car themselves and only occasionally need to take the Brussels Ring use their indicators.

te weinig en te laat
Meanwhile, here I am, using my indicators at places where there’s no people around me for miles.
It’s just a habit. And if baffles me that it’s not for so many drivers.
The amount of dangerous situations I’ve seen because other people neglect to use their indicators is disturbing. Driving drunk, using phones behind the wheel, not using indicators, … it’s all things that are way to common in Belgium and make driving far more dangerous than it should be.
This is why I f*ing hate driving in Belgium, both when using a car or biking. Lots of folks don’t indicate where they’re going, making for a very nervous commute. I try to avoid rush hour like the ~~plague~~ coronavirus for this reason.

Why don’t we show road safety adverts on TV?
Everybody is complaining about the same problems.
