Will be interesting to see how they approach this goal, what with the decimated and poorly funded police forces we currently have.
The drug gangs will just spring up again even if they do manage to bust a few. It’s not driven by “criminality” as such. It’s money, pure and simple. If you enforce a minimum wage economy people will look for other ways to get by. Addressing the root cause will be far more successful in the long term. Deprivation and poverty lie behind many of our society’s ills.
Next thing is to look seriously at recreational drug use, which has become a feature of modern society. Arguably, some “drugs” are less harmful that alcohol – which is readily available in a multitude of forms. Similarly, some recreational drug use is arguably less harmful than gambling, which seems to be positively encouraged judging by the plethora of TV adverts and the dominance of gambling sponsorship in sports. But hey, there’s money to be had from encouraging alcohol consumption and gambling. This is a Tory government after all.
Bojo loves copying the Yanks. Too bad he’s copying the worst parts! Has the war on drugs worked for America?
To be fair if they get rid of all the coke dealers at Westminster, they’ll probably be more than a quarter of the way there already.
This is such a pathetic attempt at distracting the public from their successive failings and corruption. You can just imagine the whiteboard at the brainstorming session with the words ‘drugs’ and ‘immigrants’ in bold underlined text
There’s an easy way to get rid of all the drug gangs permanently: legalise drugs.
And I don’t just mean the safer ones like weed and mushrooms. Even legalising heroin and meth would represent a reduction in harm, if those drugs are pure, relatively cheap, given only to adults, and users are necessarily in touch with health services (e.g. through pharmacists).
Of course, it’ll never happen because explaining complex ideas to voters is apparently impossible.
Curious if anyone thinks this is actually going to galvanise their voter base? Tories seeming hard on crime doesn’t seem tk chime into the things their core cares about which is primarily immigration and the economy. It seems like an incredibly weak attempt to look tough on crime but is blighted by them looking incompetent on immigration.
Reeks of desperation to me, they didn’t want to go into the week with the Christmas party headlines
Proven time and time again the war on drugs does not work. Fucking twats
This seems like a cheap headline grabbing announcement; a desperate attempt to reverse some of the damage the government’s reputation has taken in the past few weeks.
They could dismantle 20k gangs, and make billions, just be legalising most of it.
