UK economy unexpectedly shrinks in August

  1. Not really unexpected when people can’t afford to heat their homes or pay rent.

Edit: As people are questioning about heating homes in August, I should clarify it is more like the anticipation of energy price hikes over the following months and the uncertainty of how much said bills would rise, plus the rise in cost of everything else.

  2. Unexpectediy? We had no government as Fat Bob was off sulking in Italy and a continuous stream of doom and gloom about recessions etc as well as fear about which right wing nutjob would be the next PM. No surprise at all.

  3. Not surprised. After a busy year, August was like someone had turned off the light switch for my business. At the time I put it down to the uncertainty over people having to pay £30,000 per kilowatt of electricity in the near future. Miraculously it picked up again after the price cap was announced. What I’ve not read anywhere is criticism for the harm these cunts did to small businesses with their dither and delay during their incompetent leadership contest.

  4. I have had a 50% decrease in revenue with my e-commerce business over the past 3-4 months.
It really kicked off in August as price increases started to really hit hard.
    RIP the economy.

  5. Who knew the racists, Idiots, and stupid folks who lied their asses off are also not good leaders? Which in turn means the country suffers…

  6. I think this is entirely predictable, no?

Brexit, insanely high fuel bills, inflation pushing up the cost of food, wage stagnation… I stopped spending money unless I had to back in April. Now I’m at the point of having to do without.

  7. It’s only unexpected to those who have not been paying attention and not trying to hold the Tories to account (like the BBC, the fawning lickspittles).

  8. 12 years of a government party has put us to this point. They’ll blame labour, but they haven’t been in the driver’s seat for well over a decade now.

  9. it seems that consumer confidence, is that its lowest I want that people are now starting to save up for winter bills instead of spending it out for moment

It also doesn’t help that we haven’t had a functioning government for the last few months, and I won’t be surprised if we won’t see any growth until 2024

  10. It’s going to get so much worse.

My income is being pinched by energy bills, food bills and, thanks to the fucking geniuses in charge, my mortgage when the fixed term comes to an end next year.

I’m meant to just magic the extra money out of my arse? No? Well then, I’ll be spending practically zero money on anything not essential. So good luck to shops, pubs, restaurants etc etc that rely on people spending money!

They’re creating a perfect storm of a recession with no mandate from the people.

  11. Government will probably blame it on:

    – The French

    – The Ukraine war

    – The EU is punishing us

    – The possibility of Keir Starmer becoming PM

    – The French

  12. Hardly surprising when you have an economic policy that gives the rich even more wealth and then when the economy tanks they start looking to cut public services to make up for the £60 billion+ cockup.

Make political parties directly accountable for their bad decisions and suddenly we might get a better economy.

  13. That’s because us fuckers are unable to spend the same £1 15 times over. If I’m spending extra on heating I can’t spend the same pound on the milk that’s gone up and again on the petrol that’s gone up and the parking that’s gone up and the car insurance that’s gone up and the washing detergent that’s gone up so there’s no chance the meal at Frankie’s steak house or the purchase of a sandwich from the local bakery is happening in the foreseeable future.

  14. We are already in a recession. Well, the common man is. I’m sure the Tory MPs and their pals are doing just fine.

And now they are saying my pension is probably gone to shit as well. Can’t afford heat. Won’t have anything to retire on. Where does it end? People are not happy.

Please, for the love of god, when there is a general election, remember the last 12 years and not promises posted on the side of a bus by liars and thieves in the run-up to the election.

  15. Unexpected???

Who the fuck has got money to buy shit?

This is what happens when the economically illiterate extremists are allowed to play musical chairs with the front bench.

This was always going to happen from the moment the country elected a shit, lying journalist because he said “gEt BrExIt DoNe”
