Gasps in Commons as Liz Truss rules out public spending cuts

  1. A tiny sliver of hope?

“LIZ TRUSS has ruled out any reduction in public spending, prompting speculation of a u-turn on the £43 billion worth of unfunded tax cuts announced in last month’s mini-budget.”

  2. I’m sure the reason we’re hearing all this piecemeal is because they are basically winging it. This isn’t planning, this is just changing your mind about the last thing that’s going to annoy the country.

  3. I guess she won’t increase them by inflation meaning they are not cuts in absolute terms but going on for 10% cuts in real terms?

Shame that this situation would never have happened if she had just done a windfall tax on oil and gas and not stopped the planned increase in corporation tax.

She fucked up the lives of loads of families to help out the people that give her and her party political donations. We should all detest the Tory Party.

  4. We pissed away £65 billion of public funds because of their recklessness and refusal to take advice.

And now they are going to pretend it didn’t happen ( or maybe blame the bbc for reporting it).

  5. I’ve got a terrible feeling Truss thinks the money set aside for helping with energy bills is considered public spending and works out at 86 billion.

That means in her mind she could cut anything less then 86 billion from public services and argue she hasn’t cut public spending as it was 86 billion up already.

  6. Tories plan = wreck the economy, labour win have to make cuts, during that 5 years the torys start to go on about vote for us and we will end the misery Labour are causing.

Gasps, Why? How is it even a suprise anymore when she opens her mouth?

  8. I see we are finally into the phase of “magic” politics. No downsides! No bad things! Just say what they want! Never focus on detail!

  9. I think she will get around this by including the energy cap cost in ‘public spending’.

Spend £60b on energy, cut other services by £59b, technically the truth but very misleading

  10. Fuck them and their tax cuts. Yet more Tory cuts!

Raise tax and reduce public spending, just like 2008.

  11. She ruled out changing the amount of public spending, not how it is spent. She could change the NHS budget to £1 and allocate the rest to a new body which has a remit to support ‘impoverished’ hedge fund managers and be within the letter of that promise.

  12. She said there would be no ‘cuts to public spending’ but savings would be made through ‘better control of how the money is spent’. In other words ‘efficiency’ savings which are spending cuts by another name, unless specifically spent within the public services the relevant dept would not spend the amount it ‘saved’ which means the money isn’t required so won’t be allocated…That Is A Cut to Expenditure, just in politico speak…

  13. Think the government should try live like one us working class little amount of money after bills goes out and see how they like it, I feel physical sick the thought these clowns running this show they making this country into ground

  14. I’m wondering if this is some sort of scorched earth strategy to leave Labour with a giant mess which the Conservatives (inevitably in opposition) will be able to complain about in order to discredit the next Labour government.

  15. She can say this as public spending includes the energy subsidies they’re doing – public services and gov depts will still be looking at cuts and be ravaged by inflation.
