    >LONDON, Oct 12 (Reuters) – Britain does not need an early national election, Prime Minister Liz Truss said on Wednesday, dismissing calls from opposition lawmakers for a new vote after her economic plans caused market chaos.

    >”The last thing we need is a general election,” Truss, who took office last month, told parliament.

  2. Obviously an election wouldn’t go her way. But what would we even hope to gain from one? Starmer? Even you guys don’t like him that much if you’re honest with yourselves.

  3. Oh if they thought they’d win they’d call one now. But they know they’d be destroyed. Call one now call it on two years time the result will be the same. You’re done.

  4. Her and her cabinet have no mandate for the policies they are implementing. While we don’t vote for a PM we do vote for a party based on the policies and promises outlined in their manifesto (and tribalism) and the policies of Truss and Co were never approved by the electorate.

How this isn’t considered utterly undemocratic is beyond me.

  5. Why is this news? Off-course she will…which politician would say “ok I fucked up…let’s call an election”. I don’t know what we expect…

  6. As much as I can’t wait to see the back of them, I do think a GE would just cause further disruption and chaos at a time we really don’t need it. Plus, I assume they’re going to just further alienate those left that will still vote for them by their behavior/ decisions and lead to the complete death of the party. I can’t imagine they’re going to gain many new supporters in the coming 14 monthsbor so. One can hope.

  7. It’s very sad that she doesn’t realise that she’s so out of her depth. PMq’s in the commons today was a sea of pissed off tory MP’s looking at the death of their party whilst Truss was responding like a barking dog in a corner.

  8. Tories: we’re gonna ban protesting and ignore any and all strikes and protests! If you have an issue with the government you should express it the *right* way.

Public: ok fine, we’ll play by your rules and sign a petition

Tories: lol, we’ll ignore that too

    Public: (Les miserables)

  9. I like her! She’s the people’s Prime Minister! She’s a nice change from the other ones who have given the impression that they really don’t like us. Oh. Nm.

  10. “Look lads, I’ve only got at the best 2 years before we’re out of power for 20 years, my billionaire mates need to make as much money as possible until then, so I’m gonna keep power and keep shafting you all”

  11. This is democracy people. Peak democratic times

A PM we didn’t vote for, after a PM we didn’t vote for stood down, is saying no to everyone wanting a general election

  12. Can’t the king call for an election?

This government is implementing policies that violate their own election manifesto and therefore have no mandate from the population.

If their policies are so good, put it up as their manifesto and let the people decide.

  13. Of course she won’t. She’s a barnacle clinging on, with the personality and intelligence to match.

The Tories only care about being in power and nothing else. The sooner they’re kicked out, snubbed and dealt with the better. The UK needs its political and cultural revolution, hopefully the next party in power can bring that (although I very much doubt that – absolute power corrupts).

  14. Our only chance of an early general election are if her own MPs refuse to co-operate with her, as they did with Theresa May.

  15. So with the rules saying that a PM can’t be nominated for a VONC a year after the first, could the opposition still pull one considering that this is a different “PM”?

I think Sky were saying letters had already gone in, so assume one could be called.

  16. She has had the shelf life of a lettuce, of course she doesnt want to go, she wants to poison the rest of the vegetable draw with her conservative rot.

  17. Cool, now she’s said it she can perform a spectacular U-turn in 2 weeks when the prevailing wind blows even further away from her.

  18. >”The last thing we need is a general election,”

    Ignoring what the public want

And the BS opinions she has, has no credibility what so ever.

  19. She needs more time to sabotage the country so when the next government (probably labour get in) they’l have to spend their who time in power fixing the tories mistakes.

  20. I’m just a yank, so I may be a bit unfamiliar with Parliamentary procedure, but was there not a Fixed-Term Parliaments Act passed a while back? Why would *any* party in power call for a general election before the five-year term is up? To us, the idea of “snap elections” is completely foreign, as our Members of Congress all have fixed terms – 2 years for Representatives and 6 years for Senators.

  21. Still amazes me that Brits aren’t in the streets blocking traffic demanding an election NOW.

    Absolutely ludicrous, and an embarrassment.
