Dutch parliament votes against Bulgaria and Romania joining Schengen

  1. >The Dutch MPs asked the government of Mark Rutte to veto the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to Schengen, as they want to analyse the functioning of the rule of law and the reduction of corruption and organised crime in both countries, the Romania Journal reported.

    >The decision, adopted by the Dutch parliament, states that the prevalence of these issues in a Schengen country “can cause serious problems for the functioning of the border control of the country concerned and therefore pose a risk to the security of the Netherlands and the entire Schengen area”.

    >Commenting on the adopted resolution, the Prime Minister of Romania, Nicolae Cuca, said that the adoption of the resolution was not disturbing to him, as Romania had done everything necessary to fulfil the technical requirements for accession. This included compliance with the matters mentioned by the Dutch resolution.

    >He added that Dutch officials were welcome to come on a fact-finding visit if they thought there were problems.

    Erm… business as usual?

    *Does make me wonder if those Dutch MPs have raised this issue well before time and didn’t get an answer, or if it is a last minute excuse to serve their own political purposes.*

  2. Bollocks.

    That’s one way to make sure far-right parties in Bulgaria keep on gaining more and more voters

    I’m all pro-EU, but that’s 2 speed Europe. Shambles of a decision by the Dutch

  3. Judge for yourself. This is the translated text of the (adopted) resolution:

    * The Chamber, having heard the deliberations,

    * noting that soon will be spoken of the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area;

    * noting that the Dutch government has for years voted against the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area for years because of connection with persistent corruption and continuing problems with organized crime in both countries;

    * whereas corruption and problems with organized crime within a Schengen country can cause major problems for the functioning of the border control of the country concerned and thereby pose security risks for the Netherlands and the entire Schengen area;

    * whereas investigations with a limited scope and fact-finding missions are still ongoing into the functioning of the rule of law, corruption and organized crime in Romania and Bulgaria;

    * calls on the government to ensure further investigations into the border surveillance by Romania and Bulgaria, on the basis that the Netherlands looks strictly and fairly at the functioning of the rule of law and the decline of corruption and organized crime in both countries, and not to take any irreversible steps until then,

    * and proceed to the order of the day.

    And this is how the parties voted: https://i.imgur.com/CBLMyVv.png

    Note that VVD and all parties to the right of VVD voted to adopt this resolution, with the exception of FVD (which I have no explanation for).

    SP, BIJ1 and PvdD are on the left, but more Euro-sceptical than parties like GL (Greens) and PvdA (socdem). D66 and Volt are strongly pro-European and it should not come as a surprise that they voted against.

  4. Well should we expect daily articles how the Dutch are destroying EU unity, like the Hungarians? Truth is the Dutch are extremely racist and the EU needs to take action, maybe threaten their recovery funds like Hungary and Poland recovery funds are threatened?
