It’s about etiquette in a large part. I’ve never understood smoking or vaping at a bus stop.
Some wards in Tokyo ban smoking on the street, and it’s illegal to smoke while walking. But on the flip side they allow smoking indoors.
They can ban it, but a lot people are going to ignore it and it’s practically unenforecable.
I see a lot of dog poop on the ground, and nobody enforcing the laws to prevent that.
Lots of little posters with kids that have dog poop eyes though, so maybe they’ll do the same with cigarettes and put up waste of money posters that can be ignored by the people who don’t care.
Revenue collecting basically cos they never have the manpower to enforce it yet they’ll catch the odd person here and there and fine them. Country is a sham atm.
Not going to be enforceable and is just going to lead to Karen’s/ Kens getting told repeatedly to go fuck themselves.

In Canada they banned it within 3 metres of doors and air intakes. Basically you can’t smoke on the footpath

When will we start treating obese people like smokers? 15 quid for anything in McDonalds and banning them from eating in public as a start maybe? See a lot more really fat people than smokers out and about these days. Seems like that should be a bit more of an issue than about 15% of any given age range smoking cigarettes.
And please spare me the “but the fumes are toxic”. Walking past someone having a fag once or twice a day is not going to damage your health. It’s not the same as sitting in a pub back in the day breathing in second hand smoke for 3 hours.

Ironically, the smoking areas of pubs and restaurants has safer air than inside at the moment because they’re ventilated.
It’s bananas that the minister for health is focused on banning smoking on empty beaches but 3 years into an airborne pandemic has done nothing to introduce Air Filtration or Ventilation standards to businesses.
We need these standards implemented and enforced just like Fire Safety or Food Safety standards.
Smoking bans are a good idea but much, much less urgent.
Maybe start by enforcing the smoking bans around hospital premises
Used to smoke before switching to a vape about 2 years ago. In theory, I actually agree with the idea. I think smoking in a crowd of assumed non smokers at bus stops can be really obnoxious. I can never understand why people do that in the first place.
Smoking at parks and beaches Id imagine the issue is more with litter with fag butts being left lying around. However I can’t see it stopping people who were going to have a smoke there previously from having one after the ban.
In Japan they have no smoking areas in a lot of the main areas of cities, with a couple of closed off areas for people tk smoke. Wouldn’t mind that being implemented here.
The stress thats being caused by government policy of keeping house prices inflated and supply restricted is a greater carcinogen than smoking 30 a day
