Calling it sentient is kind of nonsense talk though. It’s getting an input for the position of the ball then being given predictable feedback if the ball is hit, or unpredictable feedback if the ball misses.
Prodding a group of neurons with the metaphorical stick and getting it to model something doesn’t scream sentience to me.
Is that what they spontaneously chose to do? Like were they supposed to be doing their accounts instead?
But didn’t some scientist in California convince a room full of 500 people that they were collectively controlling and playing Pong once?
