Germany’s Plans for Legalisation. Thoughts?

  1. 20g of 15% weed is generous.
    2 plant limit isn’t a lot but I’d say the aim is to keep it to dispenseries in order to tax it. Fair enough.
    Could get a lot more than 20g from 2 plants though so dunno if that would be an issue.
    Tax based on thc level is a good idea.

    Seems pretty good.

  2. I would love to be able to just go into a shop or grow some plants at home. Went to NYC last month and they’ve recently legalised recreational weed with dispensaries slowly popping up (they masquerade as art galleries so technically you buy digital art and get gifted weed but they’re esentially dispensaries). It’s so handy to walk in like any other shop and just pick out whatever you want, no shady characters or unknown origins, dudes behind the counter are super friendly, they’ll tell you all about the strains and even throw in a discount. I prefer them to the coffeeshops in the Netherlands.

    If anyone is in the NYC area, I truly recommend this [place](https://grannyza.com/). If you google around you can find 20% discount codes.

  3. It’s pretty much the same here in Barcelona. You can have 2 plants for each adult at home, you need to be a resident to join a “association” members club, at least a few in each neighbourhood, you can buy all different kinds of high quality hash or weed, oils etc. from €5 upwards, can bring home or smoke there, usually there’s sport on the TVs or PlayStations, they are like hip bars, not crusty at all and very safe, no messing is tolerated…

    I smoked everyday in Ireland and a lot when I moved here, but eventually just stopped around 2 years ago, not sure if the novelty wore off or because I was smoking too much and wasn’t productive, but I’m still a member and if I wanted a joint now or anyone visiting did, I’d have to walk 5 mins and pay less than €20 for a gram…

    Should be legalised Europe wide imo…

  4. The ad ban is the best bit. Weeds not my cup of tea but each to their own and I’d support legalisation, but fuck me I don’t want to have to hear about. I find weed culture very tedious, like coffee snobbery, but somehow worse

  5. Tax it, regulate it, and use that tax money to offset some of the negative effects of cannabis consumption. Bonus: put the dealers out of a job

  6. This looks reasonable. I don’t smoke at all but I do get the odd batch of edibles (which a friend sends from Canada) and there’s nothing better than having a couple of them after the kids go to sleep on a Friday night and watching a film then waking up fresh on a Saturday morning. if they were available legally I would have them over drink 100%. Its extremely relaxing.

  7. The only thing I miss there is no smoking in public to avoid a. making it look cool, b. passive smoking and c. don’t know about others but the smell makes me nauseous and puke-ish and I would like to be able to walk around without that feeling

  8. Fascinating how they have an ad ban for this but cigarettes are heavily advertised. Maybe it just stuck out cause you don’t see it here but I thought cigarette advertising in Germany was everywhere last time I was there.

  9. The most annoying thing for me is that you can’t walk down any street especially in the city centre without smelling it so literally nothing is achieved by it being illegal other than costed us all a fortune.

  10. Lurker from the States (Michigan) here: actually a big fan of the percentage limit. Seems absurd just how high they can push the THC percentage. I always have to ask for the lower % ones cause usually they’re trying to sell you anything that’s north of 25/30%, seen plenty of strains getting up into 40% now

  11. Looks decent. 15% would need to be raised IMO. No mention of vapes which are 80% or thereabouts. And edibles. Lovely work Germany.

  12. The only reason cannabis is still illegal here is the publicans’ lobby and the guards, who want the easiest job possible picking up stoners for nothing instead of fighting violent drunks on O’Connell Street..

  13. I’ll say it again, the moment the UK legalises, the current Irish policy will fall to pieces, up until then however, nothing will happen. Ever.

  14. I haven’t smoked weed in a decade but I’d be all up for this.

    Would probably even have a wee toke again for old times sake. The shite they sell at the moment is just too strong, I’ve seen it fry so many peoples heads.

    Legalise and tax it.

  15. Why should there be any limit on how many plants you can own? It all it seems to do is disincentivise people from growing their own product to sell so companies can hold the vast market share. Imagine if growing fruit and veg was like this or brewing alcohol. There should be no limitations at all, and I say this as someone who is not even interested in even trying weed.

  16. One part which is missing is testing.

    In California before there were large grow operations established dispensaries would buy from small growers who used copious amounts of pesticides and other dangerous chemicals.

    Before the state stepped in and required approved lab testing of retail weed you never knew what you were going to get, or what you were putting into your lungs.

  17. Here in California:

    * Possession threshold of 25g of dried or 8g total concentrated (for edibles)
    * Home grow 6 plants
    * No THC limit
    * Ad ban
    * Specific packaging requirements making sure the fact that its cannabis is clearly marked
    * 15% blanket tax (on top of stuff like sales tax)
    * 21 and over only, zero use in public

  18. At this stage I would support anything just to have access. As a long time alcoholic the only time time I am able to stop drinking and still carry on with life is when I had access to weed while living abroad (smoking in evening/before bed only) CBD doesn’t do shit for me and alcohol is killing me and I can’t even find weed or even know where to look in rhis country anymore

  19. I honestly don’t really give a shit cause good ol’ Ireland will be 30 or 40 years behind other countries when it comes to cannabis. Even then they’ll still probably keep the 1 nano milliliter threshold for drivers.

  20. Of course cannabis should be decriminalised and legalised. It can be enormously beneficial for everything from cancer treatment (helping undermine the queasiness brought on by forms of chemotherapy for instance) to treating depression. But by far the most important reason is that no one should be permitted to tell you how to peacefully use your brain.

    And all illegal drugs should be decriminalised. Psychedelics are generally psychologically beneficial and provide some of the most profound experiences one can have in life. And at the dangerous end of the spectrum, heroin assisted therapy has proven to be *enormously* effective in countries like Switzerland. Medical-grade heroin is provided freely to those who need it and it literally reduces overdose deaths to *zero* (not to mention undermining cartel-grade heroin), all while reducing associated criminality and thus public cost. And of course ways to gradually reduce usage are provided alongside if wanted.

    Criminalising does nothing other than harm already vulnerable people or damage the careers of recreational users. This criminalisation of drugs will be seen as ethically equivalent to the criminalisation of other private behaviours, like gay sex.

  21. Definetely a step in the right direction, large thing that put me off cannabis was the fact that some strains just don’t agree with me, and when i find one that does, it’s rarely around longer than a week so was always a gamble whether im going to have a good time or not.
    With this sort of legalisation i’d gladly fuck around until i found a strain i liked and grow it for myself.

  22. At my age I’d just like to grow a couple plants and vape in my living room without the risk of my career and boring life being fucked over.

  23. I own and operate a cannabis shop in Toronto (where it’s 100% legal), and a 15% THC limit would just be a gift to the black market. I don’t sell anything that weak, except for a few CBD-forward strains. Other than those, I think the weakest stuff on my shelf right now is about 17%.

    Ain’t nobody getting high off of 15% THC weed. It would be like getting drunk off of 1.5% alcohol beer – theoretically possible but not bloody likely. There is zero market demand for it.

    Besides, if weed is generally legal, it will be a lot easier to get away with possessing stronger weed than it would be to get away with it when all weed was illegal. How’s a random guard going to know the THC percentage in the joint you’re otherwise allowed to carry? The black market won’t go away – it’ll just have an easier time concealing itself.

  24. 15% THC limit, rip. I think the highest actual percentage of flower I got was from Maine, U.S., and it was 28%. What about concentrates, they can reach 70-90%?

  25. That just would work here because it’s too sensible. If it was legalised here the government would do two things. They would put in a bunch of middle of the road measure to try and please everyone but please no one and they would make sure to tax it so fucking high that people will eventually just go back to dealers because like they done with drink, they are just trying to get as much money out of it as possible.

  26. Brilliant idea

    I have this picture in my head that George’s street (Dublin centric but could be anywhere) becomes the new equivalent of Amsterdam. Would attract so so many tourists. And so much money going back to the economy

    And the guards could focus on more important issues than someone smoking a bit of weed

  27. Should be here too. It’s waste of resources penalizing ppl for something this stupid as having weed to smoke.
