As a parent, It drives me mad, but I realise there are no legalities around parking there I.e. they are not the same as a disability space so little point in complaining. We actually ended up buying a swivel car seat so it’s less of a challenge to get baby out in a normal spot.. but yeah, wish folks would have a little more courtesy.
These spaces are predominantly at supermarkets and they should make all their spaces bigger as many of them are ridiculously small particularly as cars and subs have gotten much bigger.
Parent and baby spots are basically an advertising gimmick.
If it’s not illegal; then everyone is entitled to park there.
I’m going into buy a baby, so I can park there. 😎
When I have both kids in the car and the spaces are filled up by people with no kid seats it makes me mad.
However it’s not illegal so I’ve no argument really.
Yea, especially those fucking fathers and babies who use them
I park my Ford Ranger in them when I nip to my local supermarket to buy meat products. I’ve no kids. I don’t want to risk some hippy in their Nissan Leaf or Renault Zoe dinging my superior vehicle in the narrow spots.
Plus the extra width gives others a better view of my 3 litre diesel bohemoth.
The problem with these spots filling up so fast is the location. Most places have them close to the front door which just makes them a convenient spot for the people with no child in the car who want to park as close as possible. Anywhere near me that doesn’t have the parent and child spaces right in front of the door always has some of these spaces available. They’re usually at the side so it’s still safe but they’re not as convenient for the lazy ones.
Before I had kids ot seemed like there were parent and child spots everywhere when I was trying to park. Ever since I’ve had kids I don’t think I’ve ever managed to find an empty one!
So freaking annoying when people do this. It’s so hard to get the kids in and out of the car seat when you’ve no space. The only exceptions are elderly people and people with a disability sticker on their car.
It’s a dick move otherwise.
It’s not illegal but it’s bad form.
It’s parent and child. Not mother and child.
We’re all someones baby or possibly someones mother. You could argue the factual statement rather than the spirit of it. Hah at what point is the cut off
I use them all the time when I bring my elderly mother shopping. She’s in her late 80s so I try to get as close to the shop as possible.
It pisses me off when people park in those spaces! The worst is at SuperValu in Sundrive – there is a shop beside it and the owner drives an massive truck and parks in a parent and child space all day while he’s in work 🤬
Yes, but not as much as disabled parking spots. That shit really grinds my gears.
Yes it is right, it’s only selfish pricks who park in them when they’ve no small kids and they won’t stop if people don’t call them out.
I think people that use them and don’t have kids in their car are cunts. Entitled lazy pricks who take them up and then those who need them have to risk denting someone’s car because they need the doors open wide to get the baby seat out etc. No it’s not illegal but it’s still a cuntish thing to do
I’ve got a disabled toddler and the extra space really helps to get him into and out of the car and buckled in the car seat or into his buggy. I see people park in the spots that aren’t getting a smally in and out and it’s annoying. I don’t mind if the spots were further away from the shop, I just need a bit of extra room to hoist my buddy in and out.
Yes! It may not be legally enforceable, but it’s a dick move to park in those spots if you don’t have a baby in the car. You need more space to help a baby or toddler into a car seat (or help them out of one).
Yes. It’s arseholeish behaviour.
Impossible to find an empty one at our local centre so no I just look for a space adjacent to the zebra crossings. All I want is the extra space so if guaranteed no one will park beside me then don’t mind if it’s 100m further away
Unpopular fact: Those spaces are discriminatory as your number of children is on the list of the 11 forms of discrimination. Unpopular opinion: What about people who can’t conceive, they should just get to the back of the line? When will there be “single people spending under 10 mins in the shop” spaces? Surely they should get the spaces nearest the door (after wheelchair spaces, of course) as they will be in and out the quickest time and leave the space empty for the next person? The parent child spaces can be nice and far away, where they will have loads of space to not dent other cars and take as long as they want without holding anybody else up
Edit are people downvoting this because they support discrimination or because of a sense of superiority/entitlement over those less fortunate than them? Just curious
I almost had an argument the other day, I was following a car round Lidl car park, then it turned past the parent baby spots, I stuck it in reverse and started pulling into it, but this other woman had the same idea and almost reversed into my bonnet. She then got out ready to go bananas at me, then saw I had a baby in the back seat and sheepishly retreated. Turns out she wanted the space but she had a kid who looked about 10 in the back seat…
I don’t have kids and if there are plenty of empty parent and child spaces I will park in them purely because of the amount of times my car has been damaged by people hitting their doors off my car when parked in regular spaces. I don’t see the problem with it to be honest. In my defence, I don’t use them if there is only a couple free.
Yes
Yes 100%. Does my nut in. You need the space to lift either the entire car seat out or to line up the trolley to lift a toddler out of their seat and pop them into the trolley. Im 8 months pregnant and could do with the extra space even when I don’t have a child with me but I only use those spaces if the toddler is with me. It’s absolute laziness. You wouldn’t park in a disabled space if you weren’t entitled to so why park in a parent and baby space if you don’t have small kids. I’ve been left looking for an end space plenty of times just so I can get the child out.
Don’t get me started on the ones who use them thinking their entitled to them and a teenager hops out of the car.
Wow, surprised by the amount of selfish people in this thread. I have a toddler with a disibility, and as people are saying, yes I chose to have a kid so I should deal with the consequences. I agree, but if it could be made slightly easier by people being sound you’d be surprised the difference it can make
No it isn’t. The only spots where one cannot park is a disabled spot. Unless they’re disabled of course! But no, feck the mammies wanting things easier because they cant keep their feckin’ legs closed.
As a male, I identify as both a mother, and a baby.. So, I see no issues with it..
I like to ask if they forgot their child. Get’s them to admit that they shouldn’t be there. I don’t make them move or anything. Just making sure we both know they’re being shitty.
Perhaps only if you’re directly affected by that person’s actions in that moment, or if you’re there to aid someone who is affected.
But if you’re having a go at someone when it doesn’t affect you you’re probably just projecting your own issues onto that person 🙂
Drives me fucking cracked. I have 2 toddlers and getting them into shops can be tricky and then you see people without children loading up and pulling away.
“Hey you forgot your kid”
*Cue weird looks
“It’s just you’re in a parent and child spot and you don’t have a child with you”
A conversation I have on a weekly basis because it fucking boils my piss and my wife has been stung so many times by cunts like that.
Yeah I think Irish ppl are generally meek when it comes to any confrontation on things like this. I wish ppl held others more accountable.
I don’t think so. Maybe the person is pregnant or just after a c-section and doesn’t have a disabled car badge?
Of course it’s right, they’re being a prick, but I wouldn’t waste time hoping that they’ll change their behaviour.
Pricks are gonna prick, I guess.
I have a baby and use these some times but wanted to point out a Shop told me when I was pregnant (without another baby) I could use them. Only used them when heavily pregnant obviously but it was a godsend during those times as walking very short distances made me feel like I was dying! Now with the baby I’ll use them if available and park elsewhere if not. No big deal, I certainly won’t police the slots or give out to anyone that isn’t obviously a parent in need
I just throw a nappy out the car window if I see someone about to say something, clearly I’m a parent you don’t want to mess with.
This reminds me of the time I pulled into our local aldi with a 3 year old and 4 month old baby while my wife spent some time in hospital. Already stressed to the eyeballs I was approached by a lady and her husband who proceeded to rip me one because the parking spot I was in was for mothers and kids not men and kids.
I genuinely thought this was a wind up buy nope, she kept going and then followed me into the shop demanding I move the car. 3 year old starts crying… baby starts crying, not proud but my 3 year old got his very first lesson in the type of language an adult shouldn’t use in public.
I don’t get the drama over these spots unless it’s a massive car park or it’s lashing rain
The Credit Union in letterkenny is woeful for people doing this. The only 2 spaces at the front of the CU are Parent & Baby and a Disabled parking.. the actual car park is down a hill behind the CU and it is such a tight squeeze.
The 2 spots in the front are always taken up by taxi drivers or young fellas who just want be arsed with the inconvenience of parking behind the CU. I’m 35 weeks pregnant and have a child under 2. It’s so so hard to get him in and out of the car down behind the CU, frustrating when ya see it’s a taxi sitting in the spot out the front.
It’s really not fair to use them. I’ve literally been in tears in car parks when I’ve gotten trapped by people parking beside me & not leaving me room to get the car seat back in. It’s not their fault as the spaces are too close together, but then to see people without kids driving off from the previously full parent & child ones – well it’s just not nice. But then again, rude selfish people will do what they want anyway …
I have twins so 100%, and I have had no problem publicly embarrassing people in a crowded car park for doing it.
They moved everytime 🤣🤣
Yes, slay them where they stand. Source: Parent of 2 small children.
Yes. If people aren’t called out on small bullshit it they think they can get away with anything
Sure, but it won’t stop me
nope. just because you have a baby doesnt mean ive to park further away.
the only reason im parking in them is because they are nearer.
if they want to provide wider / babba spaces for cars, maybe make them all bigger OR move the wider / babba one further away so ive no reason to be using them.
Often there is no point in arguing with ignorant/ lazy people, what ever you say they won’t change or move. No point in putting your stress levels up over those type of people. Also as a dad I’d like to inform people they are PARENT and baby spots, mothers should not have to be the only person looking after the child.
A few wankers here proud of being wankers. I was reversing into a spot once with two kids in the back, auld lad races in and parks in the parent and child spot. I parked the car and walked up to his window, knocked, and nicely asked if he wouldn’t mind moving since I have the kids and needed the extra space to get them out. No problem, off he went and everyone was happy. The proud wankers here don’t realise (or care) that you need the extra space either side to get the kids out.
