The group of people were quite young, the females were in white whilst the men in suits and there was a blow up doll involved. Out in public in the middle of Lisbon.

  1. Its called praxe. It’s university students doing stupid stuff with veteran students telling them to do said stuff. No reason to be alarmed.

  2. Yeah if you see people walking in those kind of clothes – run! They are all satanists. It is pretty popular belief here in Portugal given how god doesnt really give a fuck.

  3. Every other week here in Portugal the students gather to pray for the nether gods, it is believed to bring great fortune and academic success

  4. It’s a university “tradition” where first years blindly obey the older guys (those in blackl) and engage in humiliating and self deprecating activities.

  5. It’s a cult and a very traditional one in Portugal. This is like a ritual where people show their devotion and veneration through personal humiliation in order to get that feeling of belonging. It’s quite exhilarating.

  6. The people who think this is bullying are dumb. The new students engage in praxe willingly. There are many sorts, depending on the degree and university, some are softer than others, it’s meant to be a joke and should be taken as such. It’s a tradition in most portuguese universities. After each praxe new and old students often engage in friendly banter. Being “humiliated” is part of it, doing dumb shit in front of others is like breaking the ice between new students. There are rules, of what should and not be done so that there’s no actual abuse, if those are broken by the veteran students they should indeed be reported to the praxe’s commission and university.

An easy way to look at it is, from a foreigner’s perspective, as if each degree was a Hogwarts house. The degree’s symbol and color should be on the shirts of the new students and on the capes of the veterans.

  7. The bat people. Avoid contact at all cost. You might get infected with extreme stupidity and never recover

  8. Students, they like to do it also across the coast and it’s definitely more fun to watch there

  9. Praxes, its a student thing.. hated by assholes, loved by the ones who survive it.

  10. Idiots whose parents pay for their studies, only for them to waste their time doing stupid pranks on freshmen.

  11. But of course people that use reddit don’t like praxe, they probably are the kind that think that they are superior to everyone around them..

  12. They’re the Worshippers of the Æmorphýs, it’s the only religious sect / cult permitted in Portugal and recognized by the government. It’s quite controversial but widespread enough that a few of our politicans were (allegedly) members. Think of a masonry with mandatory sungazing, accusations of cannibalism and their own dialect.

  13. What the hell is your problem, OP? What are you trying to imply by saying the women were in white while the “men in suits” were doing things to them?

There are roughly as many women as men in white, and roughly as many women as men in *traje académico*

This is a hazing, pay it no mind. And stop being weird with your language

  14. That’s where they go after their feast on little babies.

That’s how we usually worship the devil.

I hope you didn’t miss the mass orgy afterwards. Pretty cool

  16. Gang initiation. If you see a group dressed like that just run. It happens every year in Portugal, they’re purging society just like those “Purge” movies but in real life.

  17. They’re arguing about Kazzio. Some think he’s a portuguese god, others think he’s just a chungoso de merda. I support the latter.
