Students ‘begging’ letting agents for flats

  1. As much as I hate landlords, this is far more of a university generated issue with them accepting student numbers far beyond what accommodation is available.

Prospective students can’t be expected to be able to predict rental conditions 3-12 months ahead of time when applying for university.

  2. Was shocked recently to find my old university York has *doubled* undergrad admissions since I was there. Whereas when I was there you could find student accommodation fairly cheap (£60/week) without issue I’ve seen stories of students having to live in Hull and commute.

Also all new university accommodation is this ‘live in posh flats’ due to HMO restrictions which are much pricier, and they’re primarily geared to international students

  3. Spent most of my University time living in a caravan as it was so so much cheeper to rent a small land plot get the permission and put a van on it than it did rent a place or halls.

    Sucked in the winter though.

The rental shortage has got to an acute level in Scotland. The anti landlord rhetoric is not helping anyone.
They need to build more and attract more landlords back in the market, before PE firms and institutional investors take over the whole market. Look at Dublin. You will see getting Institutions as landlords is not working.

Reddit hate landlords. But people fail to realise that the rental market will always be there. Not everyone wants to buy or in a position to. People like students need to rent somewhere.

  5. UK: Makes building homes / flats a legal nightmare, let’s NIMBY locals dictate everything

    Also UK: *Shocked Pikachu*

  6. I understand why some won’t let to students.theres many cases of students just trashing the properties every year. Not saying all do that but a lot do unfortunatly
