I believe this law will simply lead smokers to buy more cigarettes than they need to keep themselves assured that they have more than enough when they need it

There’s a surprising amount of social smokers who only do so when going out. Will they stock up before hitting a bar? Maybe, but hard to judge the impact.

  2. >Cigarette vending machines are to be banned everywhere bar supermarkets, following a new measure introduced by Belgian health minister Frank Vandenbroucke.

What a shitty headline if the opening libe of the article mentions that, in fact, not all such machines will be banned, unlike what you might think when reading that title.

    >It aims to reduce the availability of tobacco products, and reinforce the ban on selling them to minors as vending machines are often located in areas frequented by young people at night.

Major reason this seems to be done is so they aren’t in locations where you can easily buy out of sight or late at night, especially for minors.

  3. Smoked for ~10 years, quit 22 years ago and never looked back (yes I’m old). That said, this is still just politicians “being seen to do something”. Effect on people smoking: nothing or damn near nothing.
