Lack of wheelchair-accessible housing forces man to live in parents’ shed | ITV News

  1. This makes me think of when my daughter was offered a flat with an adapted wheelchair accessible kitchen, on the first floor of a building with no lift.

  2. The default around the country is to build inaccessibly. Houses, businesses and everything else its a constant strain on wheelchair users. It matches the attitude of the British fairly well, many people get annoyed with wheelchair users having a space on buses and push users out of the way. I have had crutches kicked out from underneath me while others took my spot on the tube as they stepped over me. I have seen multiple people with canes abused and attacked. Its who we are as a people, its really unpleasant.

I think the bit that annoys me more is when the NHS is inaccessible. Where cancer departments have no place for wheelchair users and require people to walk to get treatment. Its hospitals where there is no where dark and quiet place to be for those with migraines and adrenaline issues. There is no service for those unable to leave their beds or homes due to crippling fatigue or injuries, from their GPs or specialists. Its a damning display of disdain for the ill and disabled from a service that is meant to help them and its not new its been this way across countless governments.

  3. I can’t imagine seeing my kid left helpless and thinking “well you can have the unheated old outbuilding, son”, while they’ve presumably got a living room and dining room they could convert for him

It’s shit and we need way more social housing, but letting your disabled son sleep in your fucking shed, seriously?

  4. I feel skeptical about this story. Unless there is a severely disfunctional relationship between him and parents, what parent would banish their son to the shed. Surely he lived in his parents house with his wheelchair growing up ?

A stairlift should have been installed in the house years back. They’re not cheap but if no grant is available there are loans and charities.

  5. Alright I get it’s a shit situation, but why is there no ramp for him to get to the house?
