  1. Andreas Mavroyiannis, Averof Neofytou and Nikos Christodoulides drew attention with their messages to Turkish Cypriots. All three names highlighted “solution, cooperation and security”.

Cyprus Forum presented many different panels with instant Turkish translation, Nicosia Municipal Theater (Nicosia Municipality) Theater) Hall witnessed an important storm of thought throughout the day.

We had the opportunity to watch all three candidates for the Greek Cypriot leadership for the first time, and we listened to their messages to the Turkish Cypriots.

Andreas Mavroyiannis said, “We have to gain the trust of the Turkish Cypriot community, we have lost it”.

Averof Neofytou drew attention to the influence of Turkey in Cyprus, said, “Compromise with the Turkish Cypriots is not enough, Turkey plays a key role,” and emphasized: “The Turkish Cypriots know that two separate state policies are not possible. The northern part of the island is wanted to be united with Turkey.

Nikos Christodoulides, who was shown as the closest candidate to win the election, admitted that “We should have invested more in the Turkish Cypriot community” and said, “We should send a strong message of cooperation to the Turkish Cypriots, they are also uncomfortable with Turkey’s effective control.”

  2. Strong cooperation, but they still won’t open more checkpoints…because.

I spoke to someone in the TC adminstration about this years ago, and they said that they’re more than willing to open up more checkpoints, but that the RoC negotiators really, really don’t want to do it. For instance, the road from Atheniou to Aglantzia in Nicosia should really be opened up. Unofficially, the RoC negotiators don’t want it, because the North would build petrol stations there.
