This is by far the most absurd thing I ever had to go through using any banks.

They are continuing to charge me 4.50 for “maintaining the account” and I have no idea why are they doing it, it infuriates me because I am in korea as of the moment and have no way to contact them about what is going on.

Are they charging me for withdrawing all my money from the account when I went back to korea?

  1. You call them/send them an email/contact them through the app and ask them what’s up?

Don’t know where you get the idea that you can’t reach them just because you are abroad?

  2. It’s the monthly fee for your account. You have to close your account if you don’t want to pay them… you can contact them by mail or phone…

  3. Yeah it’s just the monthly cost for doing absolutely nothing to your bank account. Not worth having a bank account in Belgium anymore, might aswell stuff everything in your matress and not have any fees to deal with.

  4. Pretty sure it’s because you’re in the negative. I’m with ING aswell (hate it but different story). And pay 10 a year for the account.

  5. You can cancel the account through the app. Had to do it as well when they started charging 4.50 for an empty account I wasn’t using. Eventually they sent a letter that I was negative and had to pay this. I paid it and instantly closed the account.

If you need another account, KBC has a free tier too.

  6. For your use case an account with revolut/n26/transferwise might be interesting they have very low fees on international payments and withdrawals and they all have a free account tier.
I’ve tried both revolut and n26 and I’ve never had a bad experience with them but some people have had some less then ideal experiences you should be aware of before opening an account

  7. Of course they keep charging you. The current account you have costs € 4,50 a month and has done so for quite a long time. And now your balance is also negative, so you might be charged negative interest rates on top of this.

Full up the account and close it. No one to blame but yourself here, costs do not magically stop because you’re abroad.

  8. These are the fees for your bank account. You can close it through their app, you don’t have to call them. The remaining amount will be claimed of course, as far as I know, it’s only free if you have your mortgage linked to it.

  9. They love this breakdown of charges shit, only bank in my life, I buy something on a Monday on a proper advanced place not some shithole and it gets deducted a week later, when the money for that I have spent already, cuz you cant expect me to remember everything they don’t take on time. Going out with family spending here and there drinking eating etc how tf im supposed remember every little shit. Better off having a lil book and tally by hand lol. ING sucks.

  10. I did maintain immaculate my AXA bank account since the last 10 years, always had funds in it and made transactions on monthly basis in Belgium.
During 10 years, I paid over 500.00 euros in bank fees.

But those last 10 years I was living in Asia.

Recently, AXA closed my bank account without any explaination and any negotiation was possible to allow to keep my 25 years old bank account where my life saving was placed.

Had to mandate my mother to withdraw my money for me and deposit it in her own bank account as I was not able to travel in Belgium to make the transaction myself.

If you live outside EU, you better dont maintain a Belgian bank account.

  11. I closed my ING account after 6 month of use. Had to pay 250 EURO in various surprise extra fee ! This is the only bank in Belgium that charge you big money for little thinks.
