Planting trees is great but they need protecting and maintaining the entire time, how many plastic cylinders have you walked or driven past with a dead tree that you know was once a headline about some org planting a 1000 trees.
Both re-wilding and un-wilding projects face the same problem in this country: NIMBY!
Question is, how long ago were they here? If its a few hundred years, maybe 1000,it should be fine, but if its basically before humans got here then it seems a little silly
I know I won’t live to see it but I hope humans do learn to live sustainably with nature rather than destroying it unnecessarily for purely selfish purposes.
Is there a technical difference between a forest and a rainforest? I always considered rainforests to be too exotic for the UK but then I don’t know anything.
I do wonder what this land is currently being used for, the article talks about animal grazing (among other things) as a cause for the destruction of rain forests and I wonder how much is livestock and how much is wild like deers. It’s going to be hard to stop raising livestock unless we all go vegan are decide to import more of our food. I think restoring forest in Scotland might be hard if the deer keep eating all of the shoots too, and I wonder if this will encourage the re-introduction of wolves into Britain.
In recent history when we’ve sent angry words to Bolsonaro about the destruction of the Amazon he has replied that we’ve already done all of what we’re telling him not to do, and he’s right. It would definitely help our case there if we were see to be regrowing our forests. Be the change, etc, etc.
I watched a programme recently about how areas of the Scottish highlands were deforested to provide suitable landscapes for the Victorian hunting fad. That seems like a prime candidate for righting a wrong.
Re planting forests just so we can cut then down again when we need to build more houses… Or some excuse….
I’d be curious to see how far this could go. The lake district is a non starter, as the UNESCO designation depends on the “man managed” nature of the area, and its famous for those vast views. Itd honestly be better used to preserve old farming styles tbh. Make it a monument to rural traditions in the area.
But around the rest I can kind of see it, but itll likely be expensive. South Wales needs investment, and likely that investment will come in the form of energy development. I don’t think you can put wins turbines in a temperate rainforest.
I don’t know much about Scotland tbf. But they admit it’s an optimistic plan everywhere, which is fair enough.
