Hi friends! I’m hoping to find some information about where my great-great grandfather was born before he moved to Australia in 1952. The application states he was born in ‘Chamele’ but I cannot find anything about this place. Does anyone know of this place or something that sounds similar?

Καμηλονήσι, Χαμηλή (source:google maps)
The only place in Greece called Chamele (Χαμηλή) is a small island near Kasos. It’s weird though for anyone being born there since there were never any permanent residents living there. My guess is that your great grandfather was from Kasos and for some reason (fishermen caught in bad weather?) his mother was forced to give birth in Χαμηλή. Back in the day greek women gave birth to all kinds of weird places because they were working even during pregnancy.
There is a desert island called Chamele as others have pointed out and there is also a village in Kilkis called Chamelo. Both of these places weren’t part of Greece when your great grandfather was born though.
