While in Belgium you can have a vanity plate reading WATTMAN for 1,000€, 1,200€ in Denmark, 620€ in Sweden, 300€ in the UK. Here, however, you have to take what’s offered, no special wishes, no way to let people know you are the one and only UELI, just numbers 1…999999, and they are auctioned for quite crazy prices.

    Welcome to Switzerland 🙂

  2. For some people it’s petty cash, if you can afford it why not (I personally don’t see the point at all but there you go)

  3. It’s a way to flex. Some people have a fancy car and want to complete the look. Note that these are extreme examples. You can get your date of birth or something for a few hundreds.

  4. I never knew we had this. Not for me but if that’s how people want to spend it, fair enough. Far better than the awful vanity plates in other places, especially the alphanumeric rubbish in the UK.

  5. I know the guy who bought BE 11 for 50k this year, he doesnt even own a car but thought it was a fun way to spend some of the immense cash he inherited. Initially it was a fun bid because he thought he wouldnt get it for 50k but he was wrong since it was the only bid. For him the 50k was worth it because he has a fun story to tell now.

  6. Could I register myself as a license plate, and then someone can pay me to ride around the back of their fancy car? (Been unemployed for a while, trying to get creative.)

  7. Even if I had the money I wouldn’t because I don’t care about that at all. I’d rather spend that money on a car itself

  8. Yes I would. Because it would be a sign (here: plate) I have enough money to waste and already bought anything else I never can, despite earning not too bad – like a house. Zero chance, it’s a dream whuch will stay a dream.

  9. I wouldn’t mind having a 6-digits sum to spare for my licence plate. I don’t hate or envy those who do.

  10. Well, I don’t need a short number to feel good! I would rather spend my money on traveling and good food 🙂

But everyone should do what is best for him/her.

  11. It’s an investment. You buy the plates, you flex the car + plates, then you seem it on when it gets boring or someone makes you an interesting offer. They hold their value, much like art or wine or whiskey. Similarly, you typically do CG tax on it, but you’ll find most of the cars are registered under businesses anyway where the plate just counts as an asset for the business, often as a way to offset the depreciation of the car itself.
