May get downvoted for this, but if actual working populations earnings are not rising anywhere near what inflation is, why should pensions?
The way the triple lock guarantee works is that it goes up by at least the value of inflation, sometimes more. Many actual working people haven’t received an inflation payrise for over a decade, if any payrise.
Why don’t actual workers have this right aswell? Why just pensioners?
Odd choice to forsake the biddy vote, but whatever.
Hahahahhahaha…..
Good. These Tory voters deserve to be miserable like the rest of us. That’s what this generation deserves for constantly believing lies.
Here’s my advice to them. Stop buying avacados, bingo pens. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. Cancel your crossword or garden weekly subscriptions and you’ll save £5000 every week. Get rid of your fancy TVs if you struggle…. Go back to the old CRT type.
Ooft. Whatever is left of the brexit brigade will jump ship for sure. Made to eat their own shit for once
The country is irreversibly screwed, recovering from this economic mess is going to be long, slow and difficult no matter who is running the country.
Budget cuts are going to happen, and the British people are going to experience the worst living conditions their lives…..good luck
This won’t change shit. The entire Tory platform for the last 30 years has been “Yeah but the alternative would be much much worse.”
Great idea. Why not piss off one of the few groups who might still vote for you?
Pensions should be means tested and yearly increases should be tied to public service pay rises. Why are old people getting a pay rise and nurses aren’t? We need all these nurses for the old people ffs
Oh dear, the dummy is well and truly out of the pram.
That is not going to go down well with voters in the May local elections.
Dint care who implements it but this is a very good thing.
This change is inevitable. Doesn’t matter who is in power. Pensioners were the main group in poverty in the 1970 to 1980s. Changes have improved their lot and the average pensioner income is now more than 20-30 year olds who are working.
put the state pension on inflation linked only and target extra for those who actually need it. My parents don’t need the winter fuel allowance and feel so guilty they send it to a local charity because you cant send it back. Some of their friends go on holiday with it which is not what the benefit is for.
A quarter of over 60s London free travel is for them to go to work.
Well now you get full brexit and tories in ya face, I just feel sorry for the few that did not vote for it but sadly the majority esp in the affected age group did :/
It’s crazy because in the US, which many consider the great evil of capitalism, has a higher basic state pension (downside being that the CoL is high of course)…. They also did a study that concluded that the US could easily fund its state pension for the next 100 years (as far as the projection went)…including rises and demographic changes. So what is the U.K. doing that is so bad?
Match pension with CPI to make sure purchasing power doesn’t reduce over time should be good enough. Triple lock will certainly ruin the country in a long run.
It’s not something that should be a threat, it’s something that needs to be done for the good of our country’s finances.
Pensions themselves are unsustainable in an ageing population, let alone the triple lock which was purely designed to win votes at the expense of long term stability
In her vain attempts to stay in power Liz is acting like a crazed convict on the run that’s taken a hostage at knifepoint.
“STOP OR THE PENSIONS GET IT!”
You know what. I think Liz is a sleeper agent. She’s tanked the Tories in every way
And around the country, millions shrugged their shoulders with such force, the ripples in the air made an audible “Meh…”
Triple lock is nothing short of a bribe.
The fact it was at all controversial that pensioners _wouldn’t_ get an 8% increase for 22/23 because of an artificial increase in wages (basically because so many low wage jobs basically evaporated or their wages reduced due to furlough—driving the average up) tells you all to need to know about how sickeningly entitled SP recipients as a cohort can be
Oh, not to mention that if wages and inflation are low then they still get 2.5% increase. Its *beyond* ridiculous
Do it Do it Do it!!!!
This is the ONLY way to totally eliminate the Conservative Party – alienating their key demographic!
“Oh boo hoo, let me play you a sad song on the world’s smallest violin” – One of the most greedy, stingy and selfish cartoon characters of all time.
Quite fitting if I say so myself
You call him Boris like he’s gonna roll over and let you tickle his tum🤮 he’s a cunt, always has been always will be. You voted the tories in and only you can vote them out but you constantly fall for their lies
Just a shame about the timing of all this. The tories still have time to put Hunt in as PM and have their army of idiots completely forget this whole fiasco by the next general election.
Ok I’m really starting to believe the lib dem sleeper agent theories now. This is just her trying to lose at this point.
60% of the benefits budget is on pensions. Not including disability
System should arguably be rethought and be means tested or something rather than a blanket triple lock rule for everyone.
For example nearly three-quarters of people aged 65 years and over in England own their own home outright [(ONS)](https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/ageing/articles/livinglonger/changesinhousingtenureovertime). If you have no rent/mortgage costs (main expense for the working population), have a defined benefit final salary pension (which basically don’t exist today in the private sector), maybe it isn’t necessarily fair your state pension goes up by 10% to match inflation when a nurse for the NHS (who pensioners are the biggest users of) sees a 4% pay rise? Unlike that Nurse the pensioner can get free public transport etc.
Obviously there are other pensioners in very tough situations but that’s why a rethinking of the system might be needed.
Guess they’ll just have to stop buying Werther’s Originals, Reader’s Digest and pull themselves up by their bootstraps.
Hopefully that will finish these bastards off for once and all
What is interesting is how the tories are controlling the narrative here, they are victim, saviour, judge and jury… when we hear bad stuff it is usually from other tories, then Hunt comes along like some kind of messiah, well he destroyed the NHS, and he’s been on the bandwagon of these idiots for ages, yeah lets get back to business as usual, totally market focused policy. There’s no new ideas bubbling up here just ‘managed austerity’ or total stupidity.
They have been in control for more than a decade their ideas have absolutely failed, wealth inequality is destroying this country, it will trash capitalism even.
We need new ideas, not just factional tory opinions.
IS Labour up to task? or will it just be more manged decline that is less toxic then the tory version? They need to get back on board with the redistribution of wealth. IMO
Unpopular opinion but I think this is a good idea. Pensions have gone up too much in last few decades. They can’t remain sacrosanct just because OAPs are too large a bloc of voters. It doesn’t seem fair to younger voters.
Good. The triple lock was a ridiculous, unsustainable idea that should never have been introduced in the first place.
Good, they have had it too easy, back in my day we would wake up cold and just put layers on to warm ourselves. These wimpy WOKEsioners might have to put their Costa cups down and live to their means a bit, and it will be good for them.
Really though, I hope next time there is an announcement that plunges another 300k people into abject poverty, they remember this and have a bit of compassion. Nobody should be inflicted with any more suffering, this entire last decade has been a series of choices from uncaring and corrupt government, not from necessity.
My heart goes out to the elderly voters who tried to prevent this.
To the elderly tory voters who made this all possible, I hope you’re happy!
Holy shit. This might be the best idea Truss has ever had.
Good. Year after year the triple lock meant pensions rose with inflation, CPI or a fixed percentage, whichever was the highest, ergo pensions have risen beyond inflation.
My wages however, haven’t. Yet to pay for these pensions, my taxes have risen, and frankly I’m sick of it, struggling to make ends meet, pay a mortgage on a house 6 times my salary, pay their pensions, plus my own pension. It’s high time the boomers had a reality check, don’t give me the old bollocks of ‘worked hard all my life and paid my taxes’. So fucking what, we all do that, yet boomers think they have the god given right to asset strip future generations because they ddn’t work long enough, hard enough or saved enough for their own retirement, expecting my lot to pick up the tab.
Not happening.
We missed a trick with covid, we really did. Not enough boomers died in the pandemic.
