The Doc on One episode about the Spike Island prison riot is one of my favourite stories recently. Whole thing sounds like an episode of Father Ted.

For those who didn’t want to listen:
The prison was on Spike Island, which was also where a good few people lived. It was very overcrowded with poor conditions and eventually people rioted.
There was a skeleton team of guards there, who couldn’t cope with it. There were fires lit, which eventually burned down a block or two.
The residents on the island were told to evacuate and were waiting for the ferry to take them to the mainland when the prisoners arrived with similar ideas.
When the prisoners got to the dock, they felt self conscious when they realised how scared the locals were, so they agreed that one house would become their safezone and all stood back to allow them to get there.
When more and more Gardaí from the mainland started to arrive, the prisoners started to realise how much trouble they were in and decided to break *back* into the prison, using a JCB.
Some decided to climb on to the roof, where they were for hours, until the mother of one of the prisoners; having heard what was happening and got the ferry to the island, grabbed a megaphone and shouted at her son.
The son soon came down off the roof and all the remaining prisoners followed after.
There’s the Rubberbandits on the right, those lads get everywhere
A genuinely interesting programme.
It’s a great place to visit if you’re anywhere near Cobh
