Minister Demir: “Wat KU Leuven anders had moeten doen in verkrachtingszaak? Dat moet u aan de universiteit vragen” | VRT NWS

  1. Oh FFS. She’s yelling about how judges and institutions are doing a bad job, but when she’s asked what should be changed, she comes up with this answer?

She should have kept her mouth shut. First of all since a justice minister should ALWAYS keep quiet about specific cases, and also because she’s just yelling random shit without having a clue what she’s talking about.

  2. The nva ministers have a tendency to cashin on symbolic cases while showing their true colours in their other cases.

Her answer make her look like a clown. Anway if the vrt keeps asking such on point questions nva will lobby for an other budget cut.

  3. Look, Demir is clearly abusing all the leverage she has, improvising as she goes, trying to surf on media attention in a specific case.

These three traits are quite opposite to what we want in a minister.

Now, that being said, KU Leuven and academia in general have organizational level problems because of the position of the professor. I would even make an analogy with the church and the position of the priest. They are both positions of power, directly interfacing with a large group of people in a lower position, practically without oversight.

Especially that last bit is a point of improvement which the institutions won’t tackle, except when pressured by an external motivator, i.e. a bag of money.

So while Demir is wrong, she might be effective.

  4. She gets way too much attention and importance. In the end she´s only the minister for tourism. She also is so called minister of justice, but that means nothing.

Her real field is environment and energy, which has nothing to do with all this.

  5. While her intentions may have been partly good (and partly very populistic), she fucked up and she knows it.

Her abuse of power to withold grants was clear

  6. Any signal that this shit isn’t going to fly anymore is a good thing.

Even if it turns out to be a pissing contest between demir and the kul rector.
