Deadliest year for dog attacks in the UK as breeding gets out of control

  1. Poor breeding and poor education on the owners part. It’s made walking in some areas impossible for responsible and heard of far too many not wanting a dog again. Not because of the dogs, because of the people not understanding their dogs, not knowing the laws, and not caring about others.

  2. I’m not sure about banning specific breeds outright, but I do wonder about whether we should introduce some type of licensing for pet ownership in the UK, that requires training and some kind of test or practical show of control and training knowledge, home condition etc. Give it a nominal annual fee that can raise money to run it and/or fund RSPCA, kennels etc. I remember as a kid we had some rescue rabbits for a while, and the person running that rescue had to come round to check the house, hutch, and knowledge of how to keep rabbits before they would agree to homing some.

But then comes the question of how is that even enforced? The type of people with dangerous dogs are most likely to ignore rules and laws anyway, so would it even help?

Regardless of either, there certainly needs to be a crack down and regulation on breeding that’s for sure, even though I think a lot of dogs come from outside the UK anyway.

  3. Unpopular opinion: we shouldn’t be allowed to breed dogs. All dogs should be neutered and breeding should be controlled and regulated by an authority like the KC. Breeding dogs without permission should result in a heavy penalty. I have no doubt a lot of people have genuine care for the dogs and breed animals appropriately but there’s enough breeders who just see the $$$ to fuck it for everyone.

  4. The thing is, big aggressive breeds always attract the least responsible and capable owners.

You either get the chavvy roadmen types who get one “cos it’s ‘ard, innit” and give it a name like Tyson, Bruno or Rizler.

Or a middle-class Karen who think “BuLlIeS aRe GrEaT nAnNy DoGs and ChIhUaHuAs BiTe mOrE pEoPle” and then look absolutely gobsmacked a month later when cuddly Dewey mauls a sausage dog on the park or ends up hanging off of the postman’s arse.

  5. If you see any variation of a pitbull you need to be on your guard. and if it attacks don’t hold back – gauge its eyes out, rip its legs apart, whatever it takes. once these things attack they basically turn into terminators. pain and damage doesn’t hamper then. they will only stop when they are disabled.

  6. Just ban XL bullies, destroy the existing ones and I guarantee that deadly dogs attacks in UK will decrease to zero. I can bet all my assets on that

  7. I was walking my 2 labradors and I’ve worked super hard on making them wait if something is coming towards us, other dogs, bikes, prams etc.

The other day 2 bull type dogs were coming towards us so I made mine stop and wait but stood in between them and the dogs.

The person walking them asked if they could say hello.

No I said, my girls just finished her season and I don’t like them saying hello to strange dogs. (We have dogs we meet on our walk daily)

Oh but they get grumpy if they can’t say hello.

Uh, no. Do you think I’m taking a chance because they are only friendly until they aren’t. No is no.

It’s never the golden labrador that’s attacked someone that you read about.

I keep mine on a lead until we get to the quiet beach as my boy can be a little boundy sometimes. He genuinely wouldn’t hurt a fly, as in bite someone and rip them apart He’s a gentle giant but I’d hate for him to accidentally knock a child to the ground or to run in front of a bike, and injure himself or someone else. When he’s off the lead and waiting for you, he often does this silly sidestep thing where he’s going forward sideways. He still thinks he is a puppy and insists on all 32KG standing over you when you’re sitting down. The amount of bruises I have from him standing over me. This is why I’ve done a lot of work on making him wait until people have passed us.

Around where I live it seems 9/10 people have labs and to be honest I’m a lot more relaxed around those dogs than any bull types. Labs tend to be as boundy as other labs so they get on fine.

When I see a dog being screamed at or just not listening it’s always a bull type dog, so if they enter the beach we leave it ASAP.

  8. Owner looks like shit/scary looking: Check

Dog is massive with huge head: Check

    No lead: Check

Second dog also looks like could take down a tank: Check

  9. I am still none the wiser as to why we don’t have a dog licensing system in the uk, with tiered ownership based on your level of ownership capability… New dog owners, no pit bulls, etc.. someone level 3 with training and years of ownership ok.. Plus, with the cost of the license and accredited training schemes that money could be used for looking after stray and unwanted animals and policing the licence laws… Not everyone should have the right to own any dog..

  10. This is probably an unpopular opinion amongst dog owners, but in the wrong hands dogs can be very dangerous. You should require a licence to own one.

  11. I was out walking my young golden retriever one evening when a man comes by with his bully dog. The dog is going like crazy to come see my Golden, so I and the golden backed off just a tad, really just to show to the owner of the bully we didn’t want to stop and meet. The man then lets his bully dog come even closer. I told him, please can you keep your dog from getting close, my pup is clearly a bit nervous and now is not a good time to say hello. He tried to brush it off by saying, ow dogs just like to say hello. As his dog kept moving forward, i thought screw this, I’m not risking my pup on even a small chance of your dog being true to its breed name. So I picked up my golden to walk away and wished well to the man. The guy suddenly gets defensive saying, ‘ you shouldn’t baby him like that, my boy butch wouldn’t hurt a fly’. Yeah, that may be so mate, but my pup is clearly in distress and I have asked you to keep your dog away which you haven’t so how about I go on about my day and you yours. The man just walked away mumbling something like ‘to many P***ys today’. While his dog followed by on his chain lead.

Perhaps I was being rude to the guy and his dog, I’ve just had to many bad experiences with this type of breed and I’d rather just have none of it, thanks.

On a side note: Why is it these bully/pits/staffies all have such over the top ‘tough man names’.

  12. Shitty dogs for shitty people. I am convinced that everyone who gets a big bully breed knows damn well what that dog is bred for. They like that feeling of knowing other people are rightly fearful of their mauling monster.

  13. In the past couple of years I’ve been attacked by several dogs while running – mostly running towards me barking jumping in my face and biting at the arms – the idiot owners are too busy on their phones or talking to control their pet. Then they come out with the classic “he’s just playing”, but it doesn’t look like that when a 35kg monster is running at you barking with its teeth out. It’s the equivalent of me running at someone screaming with a machete.

Dog owners should be licensed and registered and require a training course pre ownership

  14. Irresponsible dog owners and irresponsible dog breeders. We encounter so many dog owners that just don’t have a clue.

  15. I am *fed up to the back teeth* with people telling me how gentle their fucking huge dog is.

It can be true, big dogs can be lovely, but it’s significantly easier to stop a medium to largeish dog from killing someone, than it is to stop a massive one. If you like dogs, you have plenty to choose from, without getting one that’s hard so you don’t have to be.

Massive dogs, and increased dog attacks, are the best argument we have in this country for pepper spray being legal.

  16. Fucking loving how the public has finally woken up and seen it is the breed. The Anti-BSL movement is falling apart.

  17. You gotta socialise them. The amount of people who got one for lockdown and then went “welp guess I’ll never take them out” is disgraceful.

  18. dog lunged at my leg while i was walking the other day and the owner, little woman who could barely control the pitbull and she pulled the leash back with all her might to stop it from biting my leg and she was like “sorry!”

  19. As a teenager I used to walk past a house near mine who had a dog which without fail, everytime I walked past would come charging out of their house after me barking its head off. It never actually bit me but more than once almost caught up to me before its owners called it back. Being effectively kid I never questioned it but looking back it was the exact same entitledness and shitty behaviour on the owners part that I can see examples of in people’s stories in this thread. They always had their back door and gate open and never felt the need to apologise to me after their dog chased me, in retrospect if I had hadn’t been a reasonably tall teenager it would have ended pretty differently.

  20. :question, would you rather be attacked by a bully/pitbull Cross breed or a spaniel?
I’d feel alot more comfortable giving a spaniel a kick than kicking a pitbull/bully if it attacked me!
    Blanket ban them I say

  21. Personally I believe there’s no place for purebred/pedigree dogs in this day and age. It’s eugenics for dogs. By restricting breeding in such a way, evolution is prevented from doing what evolution does. Adapt and survive. This is why cross bred dogs live longer, have far less health issues including congenital defects and problems concerning the temperament. The fact is that pure bred dogs suffer. It might be an uncomfortable truth but it’s still the truth.
My first job was in a kennels that had a Crufts winner. The things I saw there will always prevent me from supporting this abhorrent process.
Dogs are companion animals, not accessories or chattel.

  22. Veterinary nurse here and I’m not at all surprised. 90% of dog owners I meet shouldn’t have a dog and would have been better off with a stuffed toy.

We have so many dogs that are on anti anxiety/sedative medication because the owner hasn’t been arsed to do any training or socialisation.

Also so many breeders breeding from dogs with health or behaviour problems and continuing the issue.

I’d be all for some kind of license to own a dog.
