Scotland will not be forced to join the Euro if it rejoins the EU after voting for independence from the UK, Nicola Sturgeon has said.

The First Minister insisted that an independent Scotland would be able to keep using its own currency while being part of the EU, citing examples of other countries, including Sweden.

She was responding to reports that Brussels will insist that an independent Scotland commits to joining the Euro before membership is considered.

Citing four separate sources, The Times newspaper said the EU was uneasy about the position set out by Ms Sturgeon last week in her paper on the economics of independence.

The document confirmed that an independent Scotland would initially keep using the pound sterling on an informal basis, until it was in a position to launch its own currency.

Ms Sturgeon said at the time that joining the Euro was not “the right option for Scotland”, but an EU source told the newspaper its position boiled down to: “No Euro, no membership”.

Challenged to clarify her position during First Minister’s Questions, Ms Sturgeon read out a series of quotes which she said proved Scotland would not have to join the Euro.

They included former Labour MEP, David Martin, who, according to the First Minster, once said: “They are not going to force us to join the Euro”.

Ms Sturgeon also quoted David Cameron, who said in 2012: “Not all countries in the European Union will join the Euro”, and Jean-Claude Juncker, the former president of the European Commission, who said in 2017: “There is no intention of forcing countries to join the Euro if they are not willing or not able to do so.”

  2. She really is going full on Leave campaign. The irony that these nats are literally the other side of the coin of Brexiteers is lost on them isn’t it?

EU: If Scotland is to join the EU it would have to adopt the Euro.

Sturgeon / SNP: No don’t listen to them we’ll use the pound!

I wonder who I believe considering its up to the EU whether to accept Scotland.

Is her insisting Scotland won’t have to adopt the Euro to do with the fact that 90% of Scots want to keep the pound. How can she expect Scots to trust her and the SNP to build a new country when she’s not being addressing the fact that she doesn’t even know what our currency would be?

  3. lol yeah you would. idk maybe im biased cause im english and would like scotland to stay. But them leaving UK would be way worse for them than brexit was for the uk

  4. It’s technicaly the truth yeah but not sure if you say it like that you will not end up being vetoed, i really like scottish people but i’m not sure it’s the best way to do it, and i’m sure the Eu will make sure that nobody follow the example of other country which didn’t adopt euro.

  5. >All EU Member States, except Denmark, are required to adopt the euro and join the euro area. To do this they must meet certain conditions known as ‘convergence criteria’.

Of course nobody will force member states for the moment, but maybe at some point in the future it will become a problem if a country joins the EU but doesn’t want the euro.
