But it’s Ireland, you can’t teach stupid.

  1. I may be wrong but I don’t think it’s for every stop in traffic, but just for when an emergency vehicle is required. I believe they send out a radio broadcast to alert everyone. Sometimes the Jack Lynch tunnel does the same thing if there is an issue in it

  2. That’s when there is a crash on their autoban which ironically is responsible for a large amounts of deaths due to its speed limits or lack there of.

  3. We can’t get people to drive in the correct lane on our motorway so there’s no need for this, the driving lane will be empty.

  4. This exact thing happens all the time on the south link in cork. People do that exact maneuver to make room for ambulances coming down into the city.

  5. Showed this to my wife, who’s from Spain, while I was saying to her that I couldn’t believe how well organised the Germans are.

Got a straight look from her as she asked “You don’t do it here?”

Apparently this is normal protocol in Spain as well, which would make me begin to think that maybe we’re the exception?

Why can’t we do things like this?

  6. We don’t do it because the British don’t do it – and we mimic almost everything they do, except good things like their MOT, instead we like to wait 8 months for an NCT test.

  7. What’s the problem with leaving the shoulder empty for emergency vehicles?

I think we are pretty good by comparison to some countries. In the UK I was stuck in standstill traffic because of an accident further down the motorway. I was shocked by the amount of BMWs and Audi’s driving up the shoulder and eventually causing traffic there too.

  8. This is what I was told from my brother in law who married and lives there for 15y. Some stuff might be slightly off but I still remember the most.

To get a license in Germany there quite a few more steps than other countries and usually the process is quite long and can take 1y.

    – You do an German test, this proves you can understand basic German, otherwise you need to do everything in English. Bad luck if you also don’t speak English.

    – You need to do a Phisio check, this proves if you are apt to drive, need glasses while driving or need special car to suit your limitations.

    – You do a First Aid course.

    – You do a Theory test, there is a book same as other countries like here in Ireland of the Traffic laws etc, in there is just slightly more emphasis on resposabilities as a driver & behaviour. Test is done electronically same as here, you can only get 2 questions wrong but it’s 50 questions instead of 30.

    – You need to apply for a learners permit, this does not allows you to drive alone, this only allows you to get lessons from a school or a certified Instructor. There is a minimum of hours you need classes but your application for the driving test needs to be signed by your instructor and if they submit too many students who fail they might loose their permit.

    – Driving test is complete is 3 parts, basic car driving, reaction car driving (like when you aquaplane, avoiding pedestrians etc!) and basic car maintenance understanding, like how to check your lights, change a tire and see if the car is working properly. You cannot fail any of this to pass. You have 2 warnings if your mistake is minor or fail immediately for a gross mistake.

After this your license is temporary for a period of 3y and if you commit any infraction it can be revoked.

He mentioned something regarding limitations when you are a new driver but I don’t remember I only remember it’s different than here…

I drove there multiple times already and never had an issue, but people still don’t use their blinkers enough or move away when you are going into the motorway because they have the right of way so they don’t need to.

My a while in Dublin, twats driving from Malahide to Bray on the same lane of the M50.

  9. Seems like you were lucky the day it happened to you. yes it is written law and the penalties actually got increased just recently for blocking the way, but way too many still don’t do it. Until the police and ambulance comes racing down to the crash site, suddenly everyone panicky and tries to move, guess what you can’t move when everyone is standing still.

  10. I lived in Germany for 8 years and have been stuck in more stau’s than I care to remember. This does not happen 99 times out of 100, the only time traffic parts like this is when a blue light vehicle is driving. Admittedly once traffic parts it’s very efficient.

  11. I was on the motorway few days back when M7 was closed and we were stuck in traffic for 2 hours. All the chancers on the road were speeding off on the hard shoulder. When one Garda car turned up, few of them got tickets. This wouldn’t work in Ireland. People don’t have ethics for it.

  12. If it happened here you’d get some wanker drive straight up the middle to the front 😂

    100% agree though

  13. this is the law in north america, why is it not in ireland? i assumed it was the case for most countries

  14. A – Germans follow rules
B – we have hard shoulder for exactly that purpose
C – some dickhead would 100% drive up the centre

  15. Similar ideas in Holland where you overtake and pull back in not sit in the fast lane the police do no take kindly to it and will fine you big time

  16. Not sure why this is needed on a road with a shoulder.

Seems like an overly complicated solution to a non-existent problem.

  17. That is brilliant! these days I do not even see cars move to the side when you can not only hear sirens but see Emergency vehicles needing to get past.

  18. Can confirm this is the case, was in Austria once and they’re was the middle lane open. I Drove for about 5km before I figured it out.
