Translation: it costs us too much money to put on, so we blame it on a scapegoat.
Yeah right – is that all you found? Someone should go over the accounts of the show and the last 24 months of emails of all the people involved in the decision.
If every air show in the world was cancelled, would it have a measurable impact on climate change?
On the one hand sad, I have some good memories of the air show.
On the other hand, yeah, obviously, the reasoning here is sound.
On the freaky third hand however….I doubt this was done because of climate change and rather thats just something convenient and PR friendly to blame rather than the actual reason of budget issues.
Another little piece of joy for the plebs, gone.
I realise it’s subjective but I have so many fond memories of the Air Show. Just another nail in the coffin of this miserable casket that we call the UK.
Blowhards on our local council want to cancel the towns bonfire night too.
I’d rather have the pollution than have no culture.
What a load of bollocks. Even a 9 year can see that it’s fuck all to do with climate change and more to do with money.
Will Farnborough air show be cancelled? Bournemouth? All the others?
Thought not.
To be fair, the local residents hate it. Cant even park outside your own house. And the event has just become a total piss up over the last 5 years. Money is better off being spent on activities/events for kids.
In other news, private jets are more popular than ever.
That should cancel out the billions of tons of cO2 China releases every year!
Won’t be a huge miss it’s been absolutely wank the past couple of times it’s been on and is just an excuse for a lot to have a bar crawl across the front
Is that a government directive, as in this applies to the whole of the UK wrt airshows? Are we shutting down all the airports as well then…you know, for climate change – as they’re all technically ‘airshows’ of a fashion!
More cost cutting and degradation of our quality and culture to appease the ever changing carbon boogie man.
Sunderland had an airshow? Surprising for such a depressed town.
Oh come on, what sort of excuse is that? If they want to be environmental friendly, first thing to do is to ‘terminate’ themselves, that will for sure reduce a lot of carbon emissions.
I live near Shoreham.
What happened there, was a valid reason to permanently cancel.
Great. It’s not like the businesses along the seafront will miss the 1 million visitors (3x the population of Sunderland) that the airshow brought every year.
Worst council in the country BY FAR.
>The popular event which attracts hundreds of thousands of people to the city’s seafront each year has been cancelled and the authority says the “global climate emergency” is a key factor in its decision.
No one believes this. Tourism is dead and they can’t afford the aviation fuel.
Sunderland City Council needs an audit, because they are lying about financial difficulties.
It’s cancelled because Newcastle said so. Get you’re own airport! 😉
As a Sunderland council tax payer. I’d LOVE to know what they’re going to replace it with. The local area will lose out on hundreds of thousands of pounds every year because of this.
Might as well cancel the north run as well, 50000 people from all over the world travelling to Newcastle just to run to shields.
The climate change argument sounds like an absolute load of bulls hip to me.
