Average energy bill forecast to hit £4,347 after Truss U-turn on support

  1. So the question is why are we paying 4 times what we were last year given that wholesale gas is cheaper than it was last year.

Also we’re less than 5% reliant on Russian gas, Germany has had a price increase of 3% and they’re far more reliant on Russian gas than we are.

We also have a higher renewable electricity generation rate than both Germany and France yet our bills are going up 400%

The current Tory energy bail out plan costs more on its own than Corbyn’s plan to renationalise the energy companies, rail companies and Royal Mail.

  2. Martin Lewis makes a good point in that the price freeze was expensive, and protected people like himself who could afford bills.

Much better and cheaper to offer targeted support for those that need it

  3. Why tho? Gas prices are said to be lower than before the “special ops” in ukraine , so what is the fucking reason to rob us blind ?

  4. It’s just a stunt, remove the cap in April, reinstate something similar come next autumn and bang we are being supported, just before the next general election – perfect PR….

  5. So now we have high energy prices AND mortgages through the roof. Some quality Conservatives economics there. Strong and Stable.

  6. More of this. The support scheme was horrible initiative that helped the rich at huge cost to taxpayer and public services. It was insane that we were looking at continuing it for two years. They have to come up with something else. And yeah, Tories do likely something equally awful but I don’t think anyone should support a scheme that was not only a massive transfer of money from the public purse to the rich but a transfer of the money offshore.

The pressure needs to be on for something that targets support to those who actually need it

  7. Tbh…I can’t keep up!! We were getting something…now we’re not?? It was being capped…then it’s not?? Or is it??…Is Liz Truss still Prime Minister…or has that changed??

  8. My friend set up a new company a couple of months ago and he wanted to start manufacturing an electronic device he found a niche for.

He was going to rent a workshop to start manufacturing, but he got spooked by soaring energy costs and no cap on businesses. It is completely unclear what is going to happen, he still has no clue whether business is going to get any relief and now they are talking about helping until April, he can’t really commit to renting a workshop.

But who cares about some small business right?

  9. Odd one, I used to pay for energy and it was about £55 a month in June last year.
Haven’t lived there since and am renting with all bills included, what would the value be now? Like £150?

  10. Is that for power and heating gas combined? Because holy moly that is a lot of money. Even with the increases in power cost and heating gas cost I’m unlikely to go over 2000€/year as a single person.

4.347 POUNDS is insane. What are the prices over there right now?

  11. Don’t worry folks at least stamp duty wasn’t cut from the budget, so we can all imagine the tax savings we could make if people actually had money to buy houses now. Oh wait the rich still can….

  12. My bill has barely went up with all the increases, my standing charge has only increased by about 1p and my pKw/h has only went up by 0.5p. My annual forecast has went from £2,200 to £2,400.
The biggest thing I’ve noticed is the price of food basically doubling in this cost of living crisis.

The media need to get their priorities in check, if they are as Tory backed as they are reported to be, you’d thing they’d stop scaremongering the populous with stories like this cause all they are doing is showing how inept they are at supporting their backers.

Not that I want them to support the Tories, I’d rather they held true political neutrality instead but getting them to quit scaremongering with exaggerated headlines or spewing out half truths is better than the current story spinning they do.

  13. European gas prices are almost back to the same level as pre Ukraine invasion. Why are energy prices still rising for consumers?!

  14. At this point, remind me why I pay income tax and national insurance?

Failing NHS and other public services because of lack of funding and the most incompetent govt ever assembled, it would be funny if it was satire.

  15. If no one uses gas,or uses a lot less than usual, will the price not go back down as no one is using it ??

  16. What is the long term goal here. If there is no energy bill support and everyone ends up using a big percentage of their wages on their energy bills, the economy will crash when no one is spending money anywhere else.

  17. Helping working families by letting them, for 1 month, imagine that their energy bills will only double. Well that’s over. Back to the daily headlines of “oh actually it’s gonna be way more than we said yesterday”.

  18. It can only be described as a huge mess & a huge con

Energy crisis yet most companies are making bumper profits! How is that a crisis?

The energy industry & pricing is smoke & mirrors to hide the truth

Previous government’s privatised energy as losing money then magically they make billions … genius thinking
