UK/EU trade down on levels expected without Brexit, research finds | The Independent

  1. its logical, but Brexiteers always hinted this would happen. They did that when they talked about trading with the rest of the world more.

The question is not so much “how much trade have we lost with the EU?” its “how much new trade have we got, to make up for that lost trade?”

  2. The Independent is a mess. The particular wording in the headline and article copy is repeated across any Tory rags that bother to report on this today. Here is an alternative summation from an [Irish Examiner](https://www.irishexaminer.com/business/economy/arid-40986482.html) article which may be a teeny bit less bias:

‘As a benchmark, the study examined the large rebound in trade between the EU and the rest of the world after the pandemic, as well as the very slow recovery in trade between the UK and the rest of the world over the same period.

“The key finding of the paper is that Brexit has really slowed down UK-EU trade in both directions compared to what should be robust recovery after Covid-19” and which compares to a healthy recovery in trade across Europe with the rest of the world, Ms Lawless said’.

  3. If the UK is to meet its net zero targets, how much of a decrease do we need and what do we need to manufacture at home? I find these articles to be backward when considering the future.

  4. But German cars! They need us more than we need them! We hold all the cards!

(That wanker Gove is actually going round making light of his “enough of experts” line)

  5. UK votes to make trade with biggest trading partner more difficult results in less trade with biggest trading partner shocker.

In other news the Pope is Catholic and bears shit in the woods.
