‘My children ask why I’m not eating. I can’t tell them the real reason’

  1. Maybe I’m wrong but I feel like you should be honest with your kids about stuff like this. They aren’t as clueless as one thinks and they do pick up on it.

Tell them honestly, our current goverment doesn’t care about us and so mommy needs to buy less for a little bit so we can keep the lights on, ect.

Then tell them it’ll be temporary once the people who care are in charge are gone. It’ll be a life lesson for many and it’ll turn off an entire generation of voters from that callous party.

  2. My maternal grandparents always ate well after their kids to hide the fact that their dinner was whatever vegetables were left and plain bread and dripping. So sad to see these days back.

  3. The real reason is the Tory government.

It should be OK to tell your children that a bunch of psychopaths are in power and it’s two years before they can be removed.

  4. Tescos bread is 80p a loaf instant noodles are 32p

You can eat for around 40p a day all be it shit noodles and two bits of bread I doubt it has any form of nutrients but at least it’s food . 12 quid a month ish. You shouldn’t have to live like that.

If we are talking not affording that then the person in question is utterly fucked when the kids need new shoes or clothes. If she has a little one then they need clothes every other month.

The report is behind a pay wall but does the father help at all?

I’d guess at her needing a minimum of another 300 a month coming in to get to any kind of living standard they will never increase the benefits system by that.

  5. >I have savings from when I worked which puts me above the £16,000 threshold so I don’t get universal credit, but with my husband now unemployed for two years, we live entirely off our savings and we are struggling. School lunches cost us £2.70 each a day.”

    >She added: “Sometimes I have to call the school because the catering company refuse my son a meal because we are in arrears. My boys come home and tell me, ‘mum, they said I couldn’t have lunch today.’

Obviously a disgrace that’s the school would let the kid go hungry, but if you’ve got £16k in the bank then you can’t be sending your kid to school without lunch or money when they’re so far in arrears they’ve been told they can’t eat before.

I know it’s important to have savings in the bank for a rainy day, but you can make 5 packed lunches for the week for less than a 5er if needs be, ridiculous to choose to not feed your son to try and save money.

  6. I’m confused about the “Samantha” section of that article. She has more than £16k savings, but is in debt to the school lunch company and she’s choosing to not spend enough in food.
As soon as she’s under £16k she will start to receive *some* Universal Credit, once she’s down to (I think) £6.5k she’ll get the full amount.

  7. This has been the case for decades, I had this conversation with my mother who skipped meals herself in order to make sure we kids had meals. That was under Blair. You’re hearing about it now because it’s hitting the “college graduates.”

  8. So saving lives from covid suddenly isn’t worth crashing the economy for when the bill comes due.

  9. This person must be affected by the benefit cap. Its an awful policy – the worst of all the ones put in during austerity in my view. It really hurts lone parents in london and the south east.

Her way out of this is to get some work, any work, for 16 hours a week. Then the cap doesnt apply. Still tough, but she’d be much better off and hopefully she’s had this explained by a benefits adviser.

  10. You shouldn’t have to pretend your okay to people OR your family, i can understand kids, they can’t do anything about it & it’ll cause them stress which would affect their development.

But FCK ME!, don’t pretend your okay to the people around you, that’s pride, & if you would rather starve than tell people that you can’t afford to eat, then you need to get you priorities straight.

What will happen if you tell them you can’t afford to eat???

They’ll hate you?, they’ll shout at you for being poor?, they’ll lynch you???

    NO

They’ll offer help, they offer advice, they look to do something for you. Because people are decent human beings who know how fcked the tories are making life for everyone.

How can you ask for help if you don’t want to admit your not ok?

If your out there hungry please, don’t keep it to yourself, tell those around you, tell your friends, tell anyone who will listen. We need to work together, support each other, not hide away embrassed, IT’S NOT YOUR FAULT!

  11. If Politicians had brought in laws to make homes environmentally friendly and we had electric car and solar panel manufacturers in the UK a decade ago, most of our homes would be a lot greener and cheaper to run. Instead, our past and current Politicians never see any more in the future than five years – the length of time of being an MP. I would love to asset drain all those short sighted Politicians and put their homes, financial investments and cash to better use and see how the Politicians like living in these times. Their selfish ignorance and short sightedness have put us in this mess.

We should be growing more of our own food, eat seasonally and offer jobs to the Refugees (currently in the UK) to pick food so that they can earn money, respect and self dignity. We have these potential good workers right here and we shouldn’t be refusing a gift horse in the mouth.

  12. Awwww , this makes me so sad , is there a food bank that could help or some discretionary housing payment from the local council that may be available . Ring your local MP and also put him in the picture . Also the local housing advice team .When this is all over tell your kids you are the best mother anyone could ever wish for and deserve a huge medal the size of a bloody frying pan .

  13. She has 16k in savings and neither her nor her husband work with no obvious reason as to why… Yet people in this thread think it’s the Tories fault and not her own… Jesus Christ.

  14. This Government has alot to answer for, makes me so angry especially as one of her first priorities was to cut taxes for the most wealthy! What the actual hell says it all if u ask me, they need to get out and let the people decide ASAP

  15. I remember my mum colored my toe in summer sandals black with shoe dye for autumn term and it came off on my school socks. I was so embarrassed. But our mortgage was 16%!!
