UK power cut warning prompts fear for people using life-saving machines | National Grid

  1. Surely people using life-saving machines should be prepared for a power cut anyway? Cuts are rare but they can happen.

  2. Between this, the price gouging squeezing pockets, likelyhood of covid/flu surge this winter is going to be brutal & people are going to die thanks to the incompetent fuckwits that are allegedly in charge

  3. That’s exactly why there is a plan for forward announcements of shut downs a day in advance.

The choice is to shut down in a controlled manner, or do it in an uncontrolled situation or have brown outs.

A controlled shutdown allows for vulnerable people to make arrangements. If the lights just go off they will be far worse.

  4. At least we won’t need to worry about food in the freezer going off. It’ll be so cold without the heating on we can just leave it out on the counter.

  5. Gents this is a worse case scenario, people’s houses will be the 2nd from last on the list of disconnections.

Alot of industries have in their service contracts that they can be switched off by their dnos during power use reduction periods.

The problem is the gas side of national grid ships between 6-8 times the amount of energy per year than the electric side. The majority of this is used for heating or industrial purpose and the intake of renewables hasn’t been enough/ reliable to take over the current ccgts let alone import the heating element from the gas side.

Grid shut down the majority of the LNG storage, see dynevor arms, avonmouth etc. Because they thought we would could top up gas in the network via importation using Milford haven or the isle of grain.

  6. So what’s the likelihood of blackouts? Only a few weeks ago I thought some top brass of the National Grid said it was pretty much not going to happen. Has stuff changed since?

  7. I would urge anyone worried about this to contact their energy company and ask to be put on their vulnerable register. If you tell them about your medical appliances they can make sure your energy supply is uninterrupted.

  8. Does anyone know when these potential blackouts will occur? All I keep hearing is what’s going to happen but nothing when it could potentially happen. I do weekly shops like many I’d want enough notice so if/when it happens I can start doing daily shops so I’m not wasting the little money I do have.
