I feel this might go over well with the markets but go down like a cup of warm sick with the voters.
Looks like Jeremy Hunt is the de facto prime minister
It goes without saying but there is absolutely no way Truss can remain as PM, even less so now than there was at the start of the day
That was pretty extraordinary, a new chancellor dismantling everything a PM was elected* by her party for, less than four weeks after it was first announced by her previous chancellor
bye bye 19%… This was literally the only thing that was benefiting the people earning the least.
I like how he’s going so far with the u-turn, he’s also abandoning the *one* policy that Truss can currently hold up as anything other than abject failure. I don’t think this was the plan, Jeremy…
“energy bills support scheme will be scaled back”
oooof, now what will Liz Truss say on repeat when asked questions about the economy..
Any thoughts about a Windfall Tax to compensate?
The tories are in an uncomfortable position where the current situation is *forcing* them to enact policies that actually work. The problem is, policies that work are left wing.
“Look, Liz. You’re a fucking idiot and this is what we’re going to do now. “
How does she now stay in office, all credibility gone? Hunt is PM’ing from No11
They need to be gone, this government has no ideas or mandate to govern
We need an election
At this stage it’s looking like they will bug out let labour deal with it. She’s done we need at a minimum stability kier maybe be very beige but he’s steady
No U-turn over stamp duty though, gotta keep those house prices up.
This is just a really elaborate way of pressing Ctrl+Z.
What’s even the point of Liz Truss now?
No platform, no policy, no power.
I wish someone would ask her that so I can cringe through the same canned response she always gives.
So they’ve fucked everything up for everyone for no benefits whatsoever.
General election please. Get this useless shower of charlatan bastards out.
Pound immediately starts to go up against the dollar and I’ve been following the yen as I want to go on holiday – second highest day against the yen in 5 years (though the yen itself is in bother too).
The noise you can hear is the sound of the UK being shafted in the most painful way!
I don’t see any mention of the banker’s bonus cap being restored.
Can we just agree to fuck off the Tory’s please?
Why do people still vote for these plebs.
What worries me the most is why he felt he had to make this statement like he did (special dispensation from the speaker etc). He also looked very nervous.
How close to financial melt down are we?
Even IR35… Was fun guys, I decided to move abroad next month
I love how the government crashes the economy due to incompetence and then forces the poorest to pay for it.
If crashing an economy isn’t enough for a GE then I don’t know what is. This farce might actually produce general strikes.
If Truss gets shown the door, how can the Tories decide to promote another unelected leader without a general election other than being part of the self preservation society.
I bet Starmer hasn’t forgotten that in the last PMQs, Truss attacked him/Labour for only wanting to freeze energy bills for 6 months while gloating that her policy does it for 2 years. Well.. Turns out, so far everything she/they did was implementing policies suggested by Labour.
What a time it must be to be a conservative. Well deserved.
The best/worst/dumbest part is that we now (have to) rely yet again on the same old morons that delivered Truss in the first place to chose yet another PM, because OBVIOUSLY they’re not going to call a GE now, despite this process being unjustifiable by now.
Never have I been so glad I was too lazy to undo my two-year price fix to 2024.
So all the damage, all the pain we all suffer, all the kids going hungry and staff being let go by struggling business all the grannies going cold, all the massive cuts to public services still to come as the cost of borrowing has gone up so much that just standing still is unachievable, all of that… For literally nothing.
And still the tories protect themselves.
Never forgive, never forget.
Never vote Tory.
I can’t even get angry any more. I’m all out of anger towards this shower of cretins.
It’s now gone beyond even parody.
Does this mean in April the price cap will go back above 4k again?
People are talking about the NI reversal staying like it’s something significant. Calculate yourself how much it will save you per month and discover that it’s not even £2 in most cases.
I don’t think we’ve ever seen a government collapse in on itself so spectacularly in living memory.
Can they claim to be in control, or even competent, any more?
Lest we forget – at the last PMQs, Truss castigated Labour for only backing 6 months of support rather than 2 years.
Now Hunt even removes that.
She has not a single policy left.
Particularly embarrassing given they’ve been constantly digging Labour out for only guaranteeing the energy for 6 months. It’s hard to overstate just how much of a fucking mess this whole episode has been. Calamitous
Surely Truss has a matter of hours or days. She’s a moron. How did she get in in the first place. Incompetence has a new meaning.
Because fuck the poor, and almost everyone in the UK I guess.
Hunt is like a school teacher. He’s just got Liz Truss’ test paper and scribbled all over it with red pen and a big fat U on the top.
He has pissed all over her budget on TV.
The one thing she had up her sleeve and wouldn’t shut up about, has now gone. She used it against Labour only last week, and now she is going to use Labours plan.
This is complete humiliation and she cannot stay
I can’t fucking do this shit anymore. Guess we’re paying out the arse from April all because hunt has a boner for austerity.
Removing the price guarantee at this point still means a several hundred (at least) energy price increase again in April for most.
Yes, targeted support is great but it will miss a great many.
Families need certainty to budget.
Also worth noting that we have not diversified from fossil fuels yet, or Insulated homes. While the current wholesale cost has decreased there is nothing stopping it spiking again over the Winter.
This is what I don’t understand about our “Constitution” we had a Prime Minister forced out in disgrace, a 3 month period of his successor candidates jostling for position only for then the winner to have her entire campaign approach completely reversed… yet we still have no immediate mechanism to demand a general election and install a government with an actual mandate. How is this the default system?
His next move will be to start increasing NI or adding an ‘NHS Levy’ to slowly acclimatise us to the nightmare, US-style, healthcare system he wants to create.
He is a true Dark Lord: evil and clever.
If Liz is forced out I hope she calls a GE to spite them
We are not a democracy.
We have a PM voted for by 60,000 specific members.
A PM who went against the mandate won by Johnson. Those policies are what are voted for.
We now have a chancellor holding Truss to ransom and by proxy in charge. Truss has lost all power and influence.
Hunt went out in the first round when he put his name into the leadership contest.
This. Is. Broken.
This is not democracy.
If this kind of thing wrre happening in a third world country we would be calling it for what it is.
General Election Now. This is the only democratic option. Anything else is corrupt.
If she’s still in place by PMQs on Weds, Starmer should address his first question to Hunt for a laugh.
“Will the Prime Minister, the Right Hon member for SW Surrey…”
Edit: he could actually do it as an “accidental slip” – South West Surrey (Hunt) vs South West Norfolk (Truss)
So what is the plan now? This does not address the cost of living crisis at all.
So if I have this straight:
– Government lost a few dozen billion quid in an insane economics experiment.
– We now have to pay more tax to bail them out of the black hole they put us in.
– Tax money that could have been spent to fund the public services that we won’t be getting because they lost all our money.
– We won’t now be getting that energy bill relief Truss has spent the last week crowing about.
– The interest rate situation hasn’t materially changed from this time last week, so anyone with a mortgage is still going to be eating shit.
This sounds… still bad?
Liz Truss needs to explain how the UK is the least dependent on gas out of all the EU countries and yet we have the biggest electricity price hike.
It needs fixing before winter arrives in force but obviously there’s no hope of that.
