Cliff Taylor: TDs are getting more nervous about housing – and they are right

  1. If only there was some group of people who could have made choices to avoid the current situation. Perhaps there is now a group that can make choices aimed at minimizing and reversing the consequences of the poor choices made previously.

  2. The problem every politician (with any hope of being in government) has is they cannot say they want house values to drop.

Home owners, ~65% of adults do not want the value of their property to go down. And no matter how many people say “I don’t care how much my house is worth”, they would not be happy if it was actual government policy to reduce their house value and therefore their wealth.

So all parties in the run up to the 2020 election talked about “affordable housing schemes”, “cost purchase” and all this stuff. Where as the reality is the vast vast majority of all houses built each year are second hand, the value of second hand houses isn’t based on construction cost.

And then the second issueiss that most people who are unhappy with the housing situation will never qualify for a council house or any kind of housing assistance.

  3. Are you saying the number one issue for voters at the last election that is still not sorted is making politicians nervous? The issues multi national companies trying to find accommodation for their workers and those in need of social housing having been complaining about for over a decade is causing problems. The fact that they can’t house refugees, that housing was under delivered on for years, that they had to evocation bans and rent freezes in. Too many of our politicians just view as theory about what has to be done with the market. The theory can talked about, politicians and professors are good at that, it is too late for theory, it has been too late for along time. FF, greens and FG deserve to lose the next election, they have done so little. Still pathetic attempts at urban planning. Councils and SF deserve their share of the blame, but blaming useless councils is like blaming a rock because it is a rock and has no brains. The issues have been evident for years and still they are only getting nervous. They should have doing something about it, yelling for different approaches, pushing useless civil servants and architects for solutions. Making sure councils delivered on their targets. Showing fucking leadership. I filled in feedback on urban planning and future goals for my council. But when it comes to building anything Irish government bodies are so fucking useless. I love so much about Ireland and everywhere has problems but young people should leave Ireland and live somewhere with a future and a government that can actually recognise the problems it has created.

  4. Just shows a flawed system. There is obvious solutions here. But expecting TDs to sacrifice their career/income by alienating their bases and the high percentage of home owners. Well….

It’s a mess that has so many solutions but really showing up where Republics just fall short.

  5. A house in my estate went for 815k this month, I bought here 8 years ago so that’s a 50% increase in price I paid… It’s an absolute disgrace, how anyone can think this is positive is out of their mind. I want my kids to live somewhere in Dublin, how is this gonna be possible at these prices? We need a handbrake turn on housing policy.
