Bus driver is ‘sacked for being too short’ after 34 years on the job

  1. >When Tracey tried to drive these buses, she’d have to lean around a pillar on the cab assault screen to see the mirror, meaning her feet lifted off the pedals.

    >“It’s one of the most important pieces of equipment on the bus. You need it to turn a corner or pull into a bus stop. When you turn you need to watch that mirror to see the angles on the back wheel so you don’t clip a curb,” said Tracey.

So she can’t reach the pedals and see the mirrors at the same time, but she acknowledges that the mirrors are highly important.

Not sure what the company are supposed to do. If she can’t drive the buses safely anymore because of the changes, then she can’t do the job.

  2. Well that’s a shit design of mirror then.

It’s nearly 2022 and these shitbags would rather sack a loyal worker than provide her with an additional (magnetic?) camera/monitor. Surely such a thing exists.

I hope she scores a better job with a competitor.

  3. Wow. She’d be a multi-millionaire in the states after being 34 years in the job. Imagine doing the company for being sexist, ageist, disablist, griefing. Doesn’t it sound like a long list of taboos in this?

  4. Go North West are a terrible company. I had an interview for a job and they didnt even get back to me. Their fares are stupidly over the top as well. £5 to travel a mile and back.

  5. Mr Dyson told the BBC’s Andrew Marr: “This is controversial, but since I don’t know what orders I’m going to get next month or next year, and the manufacturing industry is very volatile, not being able to flex your workforce is another reason why you wouldn’t start or expand a manufacturing business.”

He added that it should be “easier to hire and fire” people.

But in text messages sent in March 2020 – seen by the BBC – Sir James then went directly to the PM, with Mr Johnson replying: “I will fix it.”

  6. I’m really hoping she takes North West to the cleaners. Five feet tall isn’t even *that* short…

Height is a characteristic that you cannot change about yourself without reconstructive surgery that brings about its own set of problems. It’s both a matter of genetics and upbringing that determine how tall you end up being. I know it’s not a protected characteristic for the sake of unfair dismissal but it should be.

Really surprised more people aren’t up-in-arms over this. I mean imagine the furore from Tumblr and Twitter if a female bus driver got dismissed for being fat?

  7. Well short people driving buses, what next people with the toe next to the big toe being longer than the big toe working in macdonalds.

    Worlds gone mad.

  8. Absolute nonsense cunts.

My partner drives the big coaches and she’s short. Guess what? Seats and mirrors are all fully adjustable, so it’s literally not a problem.

This woman was sacked for some other reason, and they’re using this flimsy reason of her ‘disability’ as an excuse.

If they had a legitimate reason to sack her they’d have used it, but because they went this shady route they 100% have some personal beef with her but know she has the law/contract on her side regarding whatever it is.

  9. Five foor four is the **average** height for a woman in the United Kingdom. Around one in ten women will be five feet or less. Assuming the story is true, this is a fairly clear cut case of indirect discrimination on basis of sex (with a possible racial element, given certain minority groups have lower-than-average height).

  10. If that’s not discrimination I don’t know what is especially after 34 years she’s probably the longest serving driver or one of.

They should give her own special bus equipped to help her instead of firing her

But hopefully she takes them to court

  11. They are probably counting on replacing her with someone cheaper.

Aren’t drivers in short supply these days though?
