I would have said the UK but they went and shat the bed with Brexit and relations have been a bit strained, probably the EU now.
EU -> UK -> US
depends on the issue. sometimes it’s whoever is playing against England in soccer
In a military sense, I’ve been told we rely on the RAF to protect our skies. There’s a presumption that the US would come to our aid if anyone tried anything. And we did let all of those US military planes route through Shannon for the War on Terror.
The EU has defended the Good Friday agreement over the last few years but this probably has as much to do with sticking it to the Brits as it does with backing us up. We’re a convenient test case for why you should stay in the EU vs leave it.
France, they gave us the tricolour and know what having English neighbours is like
Culturally, I would say Scotland.
EDIT: For all of you bickering and jabbing about niche points of history between Scotland and Ireland, I’m talking more about some of the common threads of our *modern* cultures: humour, celtic heritage, social society, anti-modern imperialism. Don’t get your knickers in a twist just so you can flaunt your MA in History.
Irish Americans on reddit, obviously
The Choctaw Nation.
Alot of people who don’t really understand what the word ally means in this thread.
Lapland
the usa, our biggest investor and trade partner, if you have a job in tech or pharma you can probably thank american investment.
Ivory coast
If it wasn’t for Brexit, ironically it would be the UK. I’d still reckon they’d be our first defense in the event of an attack.
The USA, half of them think they are Irish.
Montserrat!
The Choctaw Native Americans!
France is considered our closest ally by the DFA
If Ireland we’re to be attacked who do you think would be the first to their defence? The UK.
I’d say the yanks
It’s the Brits, just say it and stop kidding yourselves. If you think France or America or the Choctaw nation will be supporting the Irish in the event of a crisis before the UK you’re deluding yourself and salty as fuck because we besties. Love u bestie!
The United States
Historically Spain, we had to support our Catholic allays against the British
“Potential” greatest ally is Sri Lanka 🇱🇰! Island nation with a colonial hangover, plagued by recent civil war, sound people, potato to Ireland is coconut to Sri Lanka (without the famine of course) I’m telling ya 🤝 (this is coming from someone who is half Irish half Sri Lankan so I’m biased!)
Controversial, but: it genuinely might be the UK.
Even after all of the long history between Ireland and the UK.
Even after all of the *recent* history with Brexit.
If Ireland doesn’t think so, we’re stupid to delegate virtually all of our defence needs to the UK instead of funding and maintaining a realistic Defence Force.
the yanks
Probably the Yanks to be honest. There’s massive amounts of goodwill towards Ireland in America and a lot of our economic and social progress wouldn’t have happened if they weren’t invested in it.
If you want a serious answer it’s obviously America. By a loooooooong shot. By a million miles. Why didn’t the Brits burn the country to the ground during the War of Independence? American public opinion. Why didn’t the Brits invade during the Second World War? American public opinion. Why did the Brits come to the negotiating table at the end of the Troubles and why is the Good Friday Agreement lodged with the UN? Same answer. Why has virtually every American president, the most powerful person in the world, taken calls and meetings with Irish Taoisigh on a moment’s notice when larger European nations like Belgium and the Netherlands have to wait weeks or months? The Irish-American vote. No other reason.
America. We would have been unlikely to achieve independence without their sympathy. The British were wary of alienating them when they needed their support in the post-WW1 negotiations.
Nigeria. Same national saint, same national drink, 2/3 the same flag. The Nigerians – a great bunch of lads!
We have a saying in Palestine about the Irish. The Irish love Palestine more than the Palestinians! We love Ireland 🇮🇪 🇵🇸 thanks for the support & love ❤️🆓✊🏼
cork get on well with ireland if its not too late into a friday night
