Average rents rose 84% in nine years

  1. For context, average salaries have increased by 5% in that time. The average salary is Ireland should be nearly 90k to match this growth…

  2. I went from paying €600 to €2520 woohooo inflation.

I’m which time my salary approximately doubled

  3. This number is bullshit. The methodology to calculate “average rent” is absolutely flawed. The number they are using is the “average rent for new tenancies on daft”.

Most people didn’t start a new tenancy this year or last year. Most people are on old rents in established tenancies. The number also does not take into account HAP or social housing rents which would bring these numbers way down.

  4. But *how*?. We have rent controls. If there’s one thing economists are unified on is how effective rent controls are at lowering rents.

How could they have risen? Who could have expected this?

  5. “The study found from 2012 to 2021, average rent rose from €589 to €1,084 per month” Bullshit averages. Even in 2012 it was almost impossible to find a 1 bed in Dublin for under €1000.

  6. Comparing with 2013 when the country was on its knees, when you couldn’t give away property isn’t exactly right. You could equally view this increase as success as much as it is failure.

  7. Ah Jaysus lads, all the belly aching, do ye not remember that one person’s rent is another person’s income?! And sure if those people don’t feel like working at all and just being landlords of multiple properties of ever increasing rents then who are we to judge?!

Stand in the way of that and we’ll be neck-deep in a Sinn Fein government and not one of the two parties ordained to rule.

  8. Lies, damn lies, and statistics…

Flawed method of just using daft. Daft is very Dublin centric nowadays and doesn’t represent a fair cross section of the Irish market.

9 years ago was 2013. Literally the worst part of the recession.

If you cherry pick your data you get bad results. Simple as.

  9. Yeah, not surprised.
I moved into a one bedroom place a few years ago. The rents gone up EVERY. FRIKIN. YEAR. Pay stayed the same.
    No breaks or anything.
As high up % as possible.

🤷🏻‍♀️ But I can’t complain to him, cuz I’m terrified ill get kicked out.
Also i changed jobs, most of my pay still goes to the rent, but at least I can still just about afford it.
