> A crossbench peer who led the inquiry in 2001 into the death of eight-year-old Victoria Climbié has warned that “marked” cuts to social care funding had taken their toll on child protection services that could have saved Arthur.
How can 29 years be too lenient? Thought that was the longest a sentence could be, short of a full like tariff.
I’m glad that they are finally reconsidering sentences in child abuse crimes and a full national enquiry is being launched. But I hate that it took the murder of another innocent child to put it in motion. I just hope this is the moment we see a turnaround in child protection services and it isn’t just lip service. I would gladly pay higher taxes if it meant Social Services got the funding they obviously, desperately need. I’m just appalled that this was allowed to happen after he was known to social services and several people had reported it. His own grandmother had photographic evidence of his abuse and still nothing was done. It’s appalling.
