New Caledonia to hold tense final vote on independence from France

  1. I know someone that is born in NC, he isn’t Kanak (native population close to Aboriginals and Papus) but part métro (means people from metropolitan France) part Polynesian (big community there). He nowadays live in Paris, if independence wins he, alongside hundred or thousands of people, would have potentially to choose French or NC citizenship. It also would cause potential problems with China, that is interested in the massive natural resources (1/4 of world’s reserves of nickel) and waters abounding with fish (coral reefs). Basically you currently have mass exploitation of fish by Chinese vessels in neighboring Islands, NC is the only zone that is for now protected by the French marine.

[Unsurprisingly, China is looming over NC vote on independence… and even financing proindependence movements.](https://asia.nikkei.com/Spotlight/Asia-Insight/China-looms-over-New-Caledonia-vote-on-independence-from-France)
Now again I truly hope there would be more cooperation with other Oceanian powers, the AUKUS is sadly a rather incomplete initiative since it left the main EU military power out of this, whereas a big chunk of Oceanian maritime zones is under French suzerainty.

  2. I hope they go for it. Decolonialism is a work in progress

    > .Pro-independence campaigners are boycotting Sunday’s vote, saying they want it postponed to September because “a fair campaign” is not possible while coronavirus infection numbers are high

Ah so it isn’t legitimate anyway.

  3. Why do they keep voting on this over and over? Will they just keep voting until they get the right result?

If they want to be independent, then all power to them. But I think it’s a bad idea for an island in their situation. They massively profit from the French support and it really only has minimal truly negative impact on their lives.
