Drax dropped from index of green energy firms amid biomass doubts

  1. Biomass is not green. At least not unless it is an absolutely perfect system and supply chain, which in the U.K. it is the opposite,

In its current form, biomass is worse than coal.

  2. This was inevitable. We have been talking about how Drax being classified as green and a cycle was lie for a long time and it become clear forests were being cut down in Canada to feed it despite their attempts to hide that.

In theory a genuine cycle could be formed but it requires enormous amounts of land and significant regulatory control to make it happen because you have to ensure all material was planted explicitly for biomass use and is replanted. Would require a lot of treaties to make it plausible across countries if not grown in the UK.

Sure does change the UK’s green measure a bit since Drax is 3GW and regularly makes up 5-10% of our total power usage on any given day. The question will it stop receiving its green subsidises from the government or not.
