Section of new Kerry greenway blocked by locked gate

  1. Surely there must be a law against putting up an obstruction on a public right of way, so it seems like the solution would be simple enough…

  2. Not unusual. Before the limerick greenway was developed a group used to walk it to keep the right of way open, there were regularly obstacles placeb on it by farmers, silage bales, barb wire, pallets etc. Then a farmer knocked down a bridge because his new tractor wouldn’t fit under it. He was prosecuted thankfully and had to reinstate it.

On another section a farmer built a huge shed right across it. He had give over replacement land, don’t known if it was cpo’d. A house absorbed a part of it into their garden. You have to go onto the road for that bit.

Unfortunately people often get away with stealing public land.

  3. The waterford greenway was blocked by a whole field the farmer didn’t want to give up a strip at the end that used to be railway in the first place
