Tory party members react to Sunak as PM as some cancel memberships

  1. I think most Tory MPs realised that if it went to a vote by the membership between Sunak and Mordaunt, she would have won a landside and it would have exposed the dark heart of the Tory party even further.

The majority of Tory voters would not make their choice based on talent. Yes I know there is a derth of it in the Tory party now but the membership would have other priorities.

  2. So the wingnuts are leaving. Hopefully they might leave some room for a bit of sanity to creep back into the party in their wake.

Much as I hate the Tories, it’d be nice to see the adults back in charge.

  3. Lmao I sure do love tory infighting, what I hate is the malicious fucks that are in control of the country while fighting each other.

  4. This was the last straw? It didn’t come earlier, thanks any of the other mess the country went through (even pre-Brexit) thanks to the actions of those heading the party?

“But he’s not our loveable, scruffy, blonde scamp Boris! We quit!”

  5. I love how angry they are that it didn’t go to a membership vote. You’d almost think the other candidates didn’t drop out and that they’d somehow been cheated.

At least they now know how the rest of the country feels.

  6. Doesn’t feel like a lot of value is lost in that case, does it?

The same membership (and I’m sure the handful quitting) already proved their *great acumen* by picking Truss…

  7. Given the shortness of the Truss Prime Ministership seems really premature to be cancelling your Tory membership, especially if it’s only because Rishi Sunak doesn’t match your lounge suite.
After all it’s ‘odds on’ that he’ll also be gone by Christmas!!

  8. I find it hard to keep up with the mechanics of political things, but what are the chances of a tory implosion here? Is that a realistic possibility? I was hoping for Johnson to get in, then a rebellion of backbenchers to quit because of him getting in, to spark a GE, which is why I think he didn’t go through with things – party first and all that. ELI5 in the wrongs of what I have said and how this man may glide his way to 2024 through a discourse of bullshit.

  9. Good to see he is the unity candidate, able to unite all the different factions, and of course he’s brown which will be very popular amongst the membership.

  10. Unsurprising considering they’ve gone from having their hero (a man who referred to black people as “piccaninnies with watermelon smiles” and Muslim women as “letterboxes”) to having a… a…. a brown person in charge.

  11. I’m sure there’ll be another opportunity soon enough to vote for the next Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, they might as well hold on.

  12. I don’t know what they’re complaining about, they knew what they were voting for – Trusmoaners may claim it was for Truss, but really it was Sunak. Why do they hate democracy? They should believe in Britain or something I dunno

  13. I was hoping we’d get bojo again just for him to get de-seated so we could have another leadership contest, would have been a thing of beauty.

  14. A recent youtube video showed a radio call in from a Tory member who supposedly represented alot of members. He said Rishi doesn’t look “English” so he and the people he represent won’t vote for him. When pressed further, it was pretty clear it was about colour. I guess that explains why Liz Truss the lettuce won the last vote with the members.

  15. Not a Tory but glad that Populist say and do approach candidate has got found out and the guy with at least a modicum of honesty is in.

Hopefully this can turn the page of Boris style say what you want to power politics.

  16. There’s some irony in fact the racist party now has a brown man as leader. So glad it’s not the white penis.

  17. The sort of members who cancel because Sunak is in power are probably not the sort of people you would want to have a say in who should lead anyway…

  18. I remember the jokes going around how hard it would be for the tories to choose between a woman or a non-white man for their next leader. Turns out they got both options.

  19. The lack of self awareness these Tory members have is incredible.

Whinging about not getting to vote for the next PM, welcome to how the majority of the country felt when Truss was put in.

  20. Damn all the corruption, malicious incompetence, social controversies that directly go against conservative values I can tolerate. But I’m glad to see they finally draw the line at *checks notes* oh for fuck sake ‘he has a funny skin colour and name ‘ right… Stay classy Tory’s

  21. Let’s face it, since Thatcher pivoted it to attract BNP voters, the Tory party has been pretty much the natural home of the racist. So it was always inevitable that a large percentage of its membership were never going to accept someone with a brown face in charge.

I can see a fair number of racists who’ve been votin Tory transferring their loyalties to more “traditionally racist” parties, which should at least be good for splitting right-wing votes at the next election.

  22. Y’know.

When Truss, the absolute shitshow won over Rishi, it did make me really wonder if the membership did have racists.

And if they have left because he’s now PM.

    Good.

  23. The MPs want rishi, the members want anyone but rishi. The members shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near electing a leader. The issues with it were highlighted by Corbyn. When you have leaders elected by party members, you end up with nutters who appeal to the extreme ends of the party, because they’re the only ones who are members. The labour members elected Corbyn, the Tory members elected Truss. Both fantastic examples of the issues with letting members decide.

  24. This could be the final nail in the Tories coffin. The racists, which mostly, if not all, vote Tory, would rather vote a white Labour (or other party) leader in, than have a non-white Tory leader in charge.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we start hearing more about right-wing racist movements gathering, protesting, being anti-social in the coming months.

They will be livid because they were betrayed by the Tories.

  25. Who fucking cares about this Tory madness.

Squabbling about leadership whilst we see the biggest shrink on living standards thanks to a cost of living crisis, whilst our NHS is crippled and after they have just inflated home owners mortgages thanks to the tax giveaway to their Billionaires mates.

    Enough is enough.

Let’s just hope ourselves or no one we know and love, like any close friends or family need an ambulance anytime soon.

”The average ambulance response time for category 2 calls (which includes suspected heart attacks and strokes) is 40 minutes in England – more than double the 18-minute target.”

Thanks for that 12 years of Tory rule!!

    GENERAL ELECTION NOW!!

NO ONE VOTED FOR TRUSS, NO ONE VOTED RICHIE.

    ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

    TORIES OUT!

  26. This is almost poetic in nature.

Cameron’s stupid, desperate decision to include a brexit referendum in his manifesto after his 2013 speech to sway UKIP voters is finally backfiring. The Tories were so power hungry that did not consider the long term consequences of welcoming the ignorant and uneducated to their party. The last person they can reasonably put forward to see out their remaining years in office before they are inevitably forced out happens to have more melanin in his skin, and that same voter base is so toxic, they could never risk it going to a membership vote.

I have a funny feeling Mordaunt and Johnson were never seriously considered, aside from the timing of when they should back down.

The infighting in the party is peaking and I could not be more overjoyed.

  27. Think some people are scared that the Tories will edge back to the centre ground and that the sins of the past 6 years will be forgotten.
The membership fucking hate this guy and the Tories are fundamentally divided. It makes sense for outsiders to appoint Rishi but the party are still batshit crazy. He won’t be able to pass any significant legislation and will be lucky to pass a budget.

  28. > ‘Some Conservative Party supporters have cancelled their memberships following the announcement that Rishi Sunak is set to be prime minister, with one voter of more than 40 years saying they felt as though the party “has been destroyed from within” ‘

The fact that they didn’t cancel their membership while Boris Johnson or Liz Truss were PM suggests to me that the quoted person’s decision was more to do with Rishi Sunak (his skin colour, perhaps?) than the state of the party.
