So far as I can tell, the only way the UK public can get a GE is through some kind of massive protest, and I don’t think street protest will work. It would have to be some kind of massive general strike, where people simply all just refuse to work, and do so for a sustained period.
UK population doesn’t have a history of doing stuff like that. Not saying it’s impossible, but it seems implausible.
I’m not sure how, in the long run, you solve the issue of needing a GE after a new PM. If that was the rule, Boris would still be PM, because the Tories would rather stay in power with an utterly corrupt and incompetent PM than face a GE in these circumstances.
The only way is up for the Torys in the polls, but Sunak has no easy or popular decisions to boost them. I hope the electorate remembers all this in two years, but I also expect Sunak to be pretty unpopular given the decisions that will have to be made. It’s ridiculous that basically the last 4 prime ministers have now got into power without any proper public say in who it is. They just end up getting power because the previous one was so useless that they have to quit. Sure there may have been an actual election or two, but at least from memory they have all quit and been replaced, rather than been voted out.
I do think Sunak will be more competent than Truss (but that’s honestly not saying much…). Unfortunately I don’t think he’ll be as hated as Truss and might keep support for the Tories (if they ever allow an election…).
