This is why Discipline is required. Verbal or Physical
Abuse is not acceptable from both parents and children, period.
> I work when I can but he is refusing to go to school now so I have had to turn down work to look after him
When I was a kid a 10 year old couldn’t just decide to not go to school.
Thought it said adult kids being forced to leave jobs at first. Because I defo know of people who had parents who fucked up their work (eg not allowing them to leave the home for work without being thrown out onto the streets, sabotaging work search efforts by cutting off the internet or hiding their IDs).
Big breakdown of social services makes parents unable to look after their kids properly. In my day kids like this would get a few smacks and kicks at least, but that’s not the solution either, since that’ll bring its own problems down the line. Parents need support to deal with their kids in a non-violent manner.
I know this is exceptionally boomer of me but one of the kids mentioned in the article is 10.
Give the little shit a clip around the ear.
> She said she was sent “an inch thick booklet of witness accounts of what my child had done”, which included splitting a teacher’s lip with a piece of Lego and stabbing a child’s arm with scissors.
All one incident? Sounds more like multiple. If one incident, what on earth were the staff doing to let it the list get that long? If multiple incidents, then surely the first incident would have been a wake up call that something was wrong.
While the mental health support system in this country is appalling, I don’t think you can put all the blame for this on mental health issues.
There’s clearly more to this than what’s been mentioned in the article.
I’m guessing this kid is suffering the effects of mental issues, lack of attachment/attention during the earliest years and lack of discipline and parenting.
As for him not wanting to go to school… what on earth is she doing? Has she explained that if she can’t work, he eventually won’t get to eat or live in a heated house or get play any of the games he enjoys. Age 10 is old enough to understand that. If explaining that isn’t enough, then just bring school to him. He needs education so he’d have to do school work at home – don’t just let him have a day of rest and play. If homeschooling works with him, then maybe the school is the issue.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot of sympathy for this particular women. There’s a clear lack of parenting here.
