How do you say happy Halloween in irish? Samhain shona duit? Doesn’t sound right.
God that subreddit is a disaster
I’m living in America. They also pronouce it as “Sam-Hane” but shur look, most don’t even know Gaelige exists 😂
Eh, Samhain was a Gaelic festival, not a Celtic one (i.e. celebrated in Ireland, Scotland, and the Isle of Man, not Wales), so Wales doesn’t have a word for it and certainly nothing like what the post says (they have an equivalent festival, but it’s not called anything resembling ‘Samhain’, it’s ‘Nos Galan Gaeaf’). In fact the pronunciation given for Welsh is how it would be said in Scottish Gaelic. As far as I’m aware they wouldn’t say ‘sav-en’ at all (maybe in a certain dialect, someone will have to correct me). The Irish pronunciation also implies it’s two syllables, which it only is in Ulster. The Isle of Man is conspicuously left out, considering it is one of the three regions which natively celebrated the fecking thing (it’s ‘Sauin’ in Manx btw). I should also add that the Celtic summer ended in August, so the name really doesn’t mean ‘summer’s end’.
