Yup, I go to Romania regularly and stock up on all kinds on painkillers, for so much cheaper than Ireland. And any time in the north too I grab a pack to keep me topped up!
Why do people think they are so many pharmacists/chemists in Ireland ? They are a profitable business. Also if you go generic brand stuff it is a lot cheaper.
Every time I fly back to Italy I stock up on paracetamol. 1 euro for a box of 16 or something like that.
Antihistamines however…. Ireland’s got them very cheap. Don’t know about NI.
An English relative went into Boots here for paracetamol and asked where their own-brand boxes were, they looked at her like she had two heads. It’s obviously a scam in place for years that suits everyone.
It’s obviously possible to offer these things cheaper, even prescription drugs can be dirt cheap if there’s a disruptive retailer willing to stop playing the game – Chemist Warehouse have shown this but they only have 4 branches
Pound shops in the North is where I get my antihistamines.
Under a quid for a box that costs over a fiver here.
OPs mind will be blow in the states, 200 paracetamol or ibpurprofine for a couple of dollars. Always come back with a couple of bottles when I am over.
Does show how we are rode for these here, even the generics.
One area where Germany is even more of a rip-off than Ireland, mostly because you can only buy all of those products in a pharmacy, and they’re not interested in competing on price.
The irony is most of them are produced here
Antihistamines in Aldi in the UK are pence not Euros. Wonder why even rural towns have several pharmacies? A protected and vested interest. You should shop around for prescriptions too as there are shocking differences in prices.
Whenever I am in the UK I stock up on things like that as it is insanely cheap, a tenner will get you a years supply of medicine
Up the North the land of cheap booze and painkillers!
Jaysus did they let you buy all them at once? I got scolded recently trying to buy paracetamol and lemsip together!
My daughter (19) just back from Italy. Her mother bought some melatonin capsules to aid sleep. Bought over the counter for €2.99. Same product here is only available with prescription for just under €30
USA 60 200mg Ibuprofen $2.50 USD. Available in 100 dose count bottles as well.
Sainsburys will only let you buy 2x boxes of aspirin @ 51p a box per visit
Paracetamol in Tesco we’re 26p for 16 at Holyhead last week
You couldn’t even buy that down here one person
I just got jars of 500 ibuprofen and 500 paracetamol for 9 dollars each in USA in the last week. 120 antihistamines for 20 dollars. Saw them even cheaper in Walmart too.
I was up there recently and got a 32 pack of codeine/paracetamol tablets (basically Solpadeine) for £2.50
Pro tip, there’s a number on the back of every single one of these products, something like 1234567/123 on the bottom right or left of the box at the back. If the brand name number matches the generic brand number, it’s the exact same product.
Generic gaviscon is between 3-5 pounds per 500ml bottle depending where you get it up north.
Down here gaviscon is 14-15 euro for 500ml and the generic (acidex) which is 6 euro is impossible to find. The very odd time boots have it but haven’t found it anywhere else.
Yes it’s insanely overpriced here. When I’m in the states I go to target and pick up a 500x (200mg pills) bottle of ibuprofen for $12. Usually lasts me 2 years.
I was in America and got a bottle of aspirin or paracetemol for like $6 that had 100 tablets in it. It lasted me for years.
High tax and high cost, what a fucking place to live.
I didn’t realise this was a thing until I needed painkillers in Donegal, just over the border in Moville.
I nearly shat my trunks with regret I didn’t stock up going through Derry.
This shite needs to sorted out when a UI happens.
I’m a pharmacist whose worked both North and South of the border.
Ireland’s licensing laws are just mad that’s why it’s so expensive. You want to sell a medicine over the counter in ROI you have to pay absolute extortionate amounts for the legal right to do so for the actual population your supplying to compared to the UK market.
A lot of company’s just don’t bother with it, hence you will see things up North you just can’t buy in ROI. Piriton liquid is a good example and generic versions of Calpol.
I paid 7 euro for Lemsip in Tesco the other day ffs
Same with vitamins as well. Me and the missus were in the states this year and were shocked how much cheaper they all were. Needless to say we stocked up !

30 Clarityn (Loratidine) is €13.50, or £1.50 generic.
We get ripped off for everything in this country , never heard the term rip-off Ireland? All we do is get shafted at every opportunity.
It’s not even 49p, more like 29p or three boxes for a pound, that’s like a Euro for three boxes in some shops.
And got like a full basket ibuprofen gels, cough syrup etc years worth stuff for less then 20e
In fairness I’m always actually surprised with the price of tablets like Panadol etc
For what they do you’d expect them to be a few quid but have never paid over €3 for a box.
Then you see a post like this and makes you wonder what else we are being charged 6x times more for
Lol you think that’s bad? 2 dollars for *one hundred* ibruprofen… in Walmart..
