Got these kapcie in Zakopane over the summer. Anyone know what the black stuff is?

  1. These Are Fake Holes Common In Polish Slippers. I Live In Poland And I Hate This Place.

  2. It could just be skid marks or dirt which can be quite common on shoes

  3. It’s the thing that happens to leather when it’s exposed to moisture

  4. Amateur leatherworker here. Not much you can do to remove mold from leather. I’d dunk them into a bucket of water for a minute then take them out, wash them with a rag or a brush using saddle soap (i.e. fiebings saddle soap). You can try and use vinegar, just make sure to thoroughly wash them with water afterwards to get rid of the vinegar. After all that, set them off to dry in a dry place. Avoid heat as it will make the leather hard. After giving them at least a day or two to dry, condition the leather with a leather balm/leather lotion/mink oil leather paste and buff it out with a rag.

  5. these are supposed to develop a nice patina over time

    good luck

  6. It’s rust bro! Similar to rust from gravel and stuff!

  7. It is a slow-maturing skin and this bloom is a noble mold 😉 The more noble mold, the better it taste… I mean smell 😉

  8. It looks kinda like mold, true, but the placement does not fit at all IMO. If you don’t have any of that inside the shoe then I’d be really surprised it was mold. Maybe you have a piece of furniture that’s dusty or maybe some coal(?) residue and you kick it from time to time leading to those spots.

  9. Try one of those cleaning sponges, they are white and dry in a box. you put just a little bit of water on it and rub it should take it right off. It works wonders on leathet sneakers. The one on the right looks like it was packed with something blue? those look very comfortable but that is very soft leather but it probably does not take much to stain them. I’m also from the USA I was there last year, amazing place. went and started walking late in the afternoon by the time we got there we had the entire place to ourselves, it was unbelievable.

  10. My dad always taught me that you give leather a rest between wears so you don’t wear it everyday but every second day. My guess is your foot is causing the humid environment. Might be worth a try, you probably need to remove it so it doesn’t spread.

  11. Its commonly known in Poland as “brud”. No one knows how or why IT forms, but its can be combated by putting the kapcie in mysterious device called pralka

  12. I think you stained it while eating, cooking or doing dishes. Those spots have various colors, and are generally round.
I wouldn’t recommend using too much water to clean it, as those have usually cardboard inlets that will get ruined.
Try an eraser – a softest you can find, art supplies stores have those “bread” erasers that are super soft. Or rubber brush – like those used to clean suede.

  13. Where in the US do you live? I know plenty of Polish shops on the south side of Chicago have these in stock 🙂
