‘This isn’t about Paddy Power. It’s about the harm 24/7 gambling does to society’

  1. Unfortunately another example of money taking a forefoot above the ‘good’ option in Ireland where it doesn’t happen on the continent.

The debate as to whether this stuff should be banned outright can be had.

But there’s no question there should be strong & reasonable safeguards put in place and if gambling providers fail to meet a basic duty of care to their customers they should be dealt with punitively imo

  2. The Guardian football weekly podcast has done a couple of great podcasts about gambling. Bookies are fucking scum and they should be shot. Or at least ads banned during games, I’d take that at a pinch

  3. Daytime adds on terrestrial TV especially during a game I fucking hate, market themselves as one of your mates down in the pub who is a bit of bantz.

  4. Presenters on newstalk, spin1038 e.g. pat Kenny promoting their gambling game really piss me off.

Gamble now for your chance to win the jackpot. Over 18s, 3.50 per text. How many addicts are wasting hundreds a week on it?

    Newstalk etc should be ashamed.

  5. I remember getting a taxi one night. I was chatting to the driver, who revealed he had a gambling problem. He said he normally wouldn’t be out at that time, but had gambled away a week’s take and couldn’t go home because he couldn’t face his wife.

He looked like he hadn’t slept in days. Which was concerning for someone driving a taxi. The guy seemed like he was in real trouble. Like mentally hanging on by thread. It was hard to watch.

This was many years ago, before the smart phones were a thing and the internet was only available to tech heads and students. That guy wouldn’t have a chance these days.

  6. There’s a real disconnect between the news and debates about omnipresent gambling ads, and then during the ad breaks there are the very gambling ads they are supposedly fighting against. The sheer amount on TV, Online and on billboards is overwhelming. I’d hate to be a gambling addict in Ireland.

  7. If anybody has an issue this site has resources that you can access to block gambling sites. Some incur fees, however all reputable bookmakers will offer to cover these fees for at least 12 months if you contact there customer service team etc.

In the shops simply ask for a self exclusion form, you will no longer be allowed to bet in these bookmakers facilities thereafter.

I have at times gambled too much but there are resources available, you have to be responsible for your own actions to some degree I have felt. I know people disagree and that’s fine.

  8. Gambling should be banned.

It produces nothing (except for destruction) and contributes nothing (except for despair).

Sure it’s bit of craic a couple of times a year alright but it’s a stain on our collective jockstraps as a nation.

Gamble among your mates if you want. But institutions set up for gambling are the worst type of evil.

  9. Ehhh lads, come on now. Legislation like this, aahh, doesn’t ahhh happen overnight. It’s ahhhh aahhhhh complex issue. Ahhhh one man’s stake is ahhhh ‘nother man’s income.

  10. I have 3 friends with gambling addictions, one who’s on the verge and 4 friends who are alcoholics and I’m only in my 30s. The country’s fucked but that’s ok, the tax is paid and those that can do something about it are making money off it.

  11. They operate the same as drug dealers…you get your first hit for free usually. And if your not betting….you’ll get a little pick me up free bet.

  12. Convincing people to waste their money in any way should be banned. There’s nothing telling people how or why to invest their money or other safe things for it.

We don’t advertise cigarettes and we ahouldnt gambling, alcohol, chat lines or loan companies. Its disgusting.

  13. Some of the most insidious high Street stores out there. They’re just a bunch of leeches. I’d enthusiastically support a complete ban on all gambling advertising, including in shop windows. Also ban free bets and other shady tactics.

  14. In Germany you need a card that says your employed if you want to use a bookies to stop people blowing their dole on gambling

  15. Paddy power would not be viable were it not for problem gamblers. It pretends it’s about having a bit of a laugh and sticking 20 quid on a game; but it’s really about hooking hapless men on the app who’ll go on to spend more than they want and often more than they can afford on an ongoing basis.

  16. The only guaranteed bet when it comes to gambling is that you will lose. A short-term win makes you think you can always beat the bookies, but the bookies will always win. It’s a horrible cycle.

  17. I worked in retail pre 2015 and I remember being shocked by a lot of the young guys, aged 18-23 gambling on their phones for €20-50 A BET during lunch.
I thought it was nuts, it was their main hobby for a lot of them and because they all talked about it I’d imagine it was hard to stop. Losing their weeks wages was a common enough occurrence. 😞

  18. If you’re looking for a gift for Xmas, get some one how paddy power bet billions and changed the game. They’re a disgusting company.

  19. I spend a fiver every two Saturdays on the footy. I do it for a bitta craic. I’ve never bet more than 5. That being said, I have spent alooot of time with addicts including gambling addicts. They can’t watch the football or ANY sport without being tempted by a million gambling ads. So they just don’t watch the sport which is really sad. We don’t need gambling ads. Same way we don’t advertise smokes. We know it’s there if we wanna use it. Stop shoving it down people’s throats and making people who are addicted even more tempted.

  20. Paddy Power is such a horrible company, surprised it hasn’t died yet. They are a bunch of scammers who ban customers from their website who profit from promotions. Their trustpilot reviews are shit too.
