“Van der Straeten is a terrible anti-nuclear dogmatist”: Damien Ernst, electromechanical engineer and professor at the University of Liège, responds to energy-related questions

“We need to extend nuclear power as much as possible, install as many panels and wind turbines as possible”: Damien Ernst, an energy expert, took part in a Facebook Live today to discuss the energy challenges facing Belgium and Europe, and answered a number of questions from Internet users.
While many topics were discussed, the expert did not mince his words about the Minister of Energy, Tinne Van der Straeten. “She is a terrible anti-nuclear dogmatist” who has to negotiate with Engie. The Greens “have told so many lies” that it complicates the situation “when they have to come back” in the negotiations with the operator. “That’s why the case is not moving forward,” he said, referring to the extension of the power plants and the waste issue.
As for the massive electrification planned in Europe, the expert is nuanced. “I think electric vehicles are great, but I wonder if we’re not going too fast,” he says.
“It’s a dirty energy crisis, it’s not funny, but it’s due to a lack of realism at European level. Just because you say things on paper doesn’t mean it’s feasible,” he also said of the whole situation.
On the question of the energy mix, “it’s simple, you have to build everything you can in renewable and nuclear,” he also said.
As for the criticisms of some about his media interventions, the professor at the University of Liege is almost surprised. “I am 46 years old, I have worked with dozens of companies, I have made 300 scientific publications […], I have won the Blondel Medal… I don’t know what more is needed,” he comments on this subject, before concluding with some basic questions.

Never underestimate the stupidity of the green parties.
Some parties are malicious, others corrupt, but the greens are just dumb as rocks.
Funny. Because this government has done more in favor of nuclear energy literally than any other government in the past 30 years.
Reading this and these comments we’ve truly descended into idiocracy. If the greens are stupid then the other parties aren’t even on the scale of vertebrates.
The thing is, european green party stated that nuclear is green energy. Our green party is about the most pro european party in belgium, so they kinda had to change naratice real quick, thats what we saw a few months back when she changed opinion out of the blue .. only because of party pressure imo, we all know she likes her gazprom gas.
And she is the one negotiating to keep them open longer, lol poor belgium
Another person who can speak with knowledge/facts and common sense. I hope the green parties will be held responsible for the lies and stupidity they spread with speaking out of gutfeeling just to keep there dumb political agenda in place.
Problem is that many people don’t have scientific backgrounds and blindly follow the dogmatism and fantasy stories of the green parties. Funny fact as well: nuclair energy is still the cheapest energy available (extending lifetime). Especially if you consider buffer capacity for the green energy at their downtime. (no sun/wind) studies enough available with scientific facts.
>Even though these clean firm power technologies currently cost more per kilowatt hour than solar and wind, this study shows that these resources also deliver greater value, which justifies their higher cost. A robust investment in a portfolio of clean firm power options will obviate the need for otherwise-redundant renewable energy
Voor California, met waarschijnlijk overvloedige zon en offshore wind mogelijkheden:
>We found that reliably generating the electricity needed in 2045 from wind and solar power
would require building up to nearly 500 gigawatts of power-generating capacity (along with 160
gigawatts and 1000 gigawatt-hours of new storage). This is roughly half the capacity of the entire
U.S. electricity generating system today and about six times the current total generating capacity
now serving California (about 80 gigawatts), including nuclear, gas and coal generating stations,
hydroelectric dams, and everything else.
>
>*All of this excess capacity would be expensive. We estimate that wholesale electricity rates
would increase by about 65% over today* [2021] if currently available renewable energy and storage
technologies alone were to be utilized to meet demand in 2045.
>
>*It may not be possible to build
wind and solar facilities at this scale, even if consumers were willing to pay that premium*. Solar
development will likely dominate the renewable energy portfolio in California, and getting to
nearly 500 gigawatts by 2045 would require expanding solar capacity at a rate 10 times higher
than has ever been done before. There may not be enough people, supplies, or land to do this.
Dat daar anno 2022 nog zo over moet gediscussieerd worden bewijst hoe totaal we aan het falen zijn. Schrap die wet op kernverbod of geef een alternatief!
MR and affiliated should really shut their mouth about this topic considering they had a minister of pure incompetence on the Energy domain who did fuck all about anything for the years she was in charge.
Then again, “bUt tHE gREeNs” sticks everytime for the Belgian population so why should they care.
